NY bomb “not linked to international terrorism”

NEW YORK: - Investigators are sifting through blast remnants and video footage at the scene of an explosion in New York City that injured 29 people.

FBI investigators are examining remnants of the bomb, along with another unexploded device found four blocks away.

A pipe bomb also exploded around 130 kilometres away in New Jersey on Saturday.

Examinations are underway to track any potential links.

What happened?

The explosion, on a commercial and residential street in the district of Chelsea on Saturday evening, sent a powerful shock wave through several blocks.

What about the injured?

They were all hurt by shrapnel and flying glass.

All 29 have been allowed home after being treated in hospital.

What official response has there been?

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has urged witnesses to come forward with information.

“It was intentional. It was a violent act. It was certainly a criminal act. It was a bombing. That’s what we know,” he told reporters.

He promised the security presence would be “bigger than ever” for the United Nations General Assembly.

The UNGA brings world leaders together in Manhattan for six days, starting on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Saturday’s explosion was deliberate.

“At this time there is no evidence of an international terrorism connection with this incident- but it is very, very early in the investigation. Whoever placed these bombs – we will find them and they will be brought to justice.”

Has any group admitted planting the bombs?

Not so far.

However, New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has described detonating a bomb in New York City as “obviously an act of terrorism”.

However, Cuomo resisted when reporters pressed him to give more details, saying investigators had yet to determine if there was a political motive.

MFA: No Thais affected from New York blast

nyc.jpg

NEW YORK, 19 September 2016 (NNT) – The Royal Thai Consulate in New York has confirmed that no Thai nationals were affected from the bombing incident in New York, while the New York City Major assures the incident is not associated to terrorism.

An explosion occurred in Chelsea, New York City, United States, on 17 September 2016 at 8:30 p.m. local time, and has injured at least 29 people, who have all been hospitalized. Police officers and rescue staff are continuing to investigate the site.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today made an announcement, citing the report from the Royal Thai Consulate in New York confirming there are no Thai nationals were injured from this incident.

Reports from foreign media say the bomb took place in front of a blind residence, damaging nearby buildings and cars, while the New York City Fire Department later identified that the explosion was hidden in a trash can.

Later at 11:15 p.m., New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio gave an interview saying the explosion was intentionally planned, while latest investigation shows no connection of the incident to any terrorist group. He encouraged witnesses to assist the investigation process by reporting to officials or by sending in photos of the incident.

Another bombing incident also reportedly occurred at Seaside Park, New Jersey. The pipe bomb's detonation postponed a marathon event with thousands of participants. Officials believe the two incidents are not related.

Was this attack part of a three-fer? Jersey bomb, Manhattan bomb and the horrific Michigan mall mass stabbing( which ISIS has claimed as done by one of their boys). We know how they like simultaneous attacks, very effective and hard to explain away as mental health issues due to the planning, and they can't call it lone wolf because its a multi pronged assault.  Still, with the useless msm who knows what happened. I will wait for a full report on Jihadwatch.

Feds test bomb remnants of New York blast that injured 29

By JAKE PEARSON and ALICIA A. CALDWELL

NEW YORK (AP) — The bomb that rocked a New York City neighborhood known for its vibrant arts scene and large gay community contained residue of an explosive often used for target practice that can be picked up in many sporting goods stores, a federal law enforcement official said Sunday, as authorities tried to unravel who planted the device and why.

The discovery of Tannerite in materials recovered from the Saturday night explosion that injured 29 people may be important as authorities probe whether the blast was connected to an unexploded pressure-cooker device found by state troopers just blocks away, as well as a pipe bomb blast in a New Jersey shore town earlier in the day.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo, touring the site of the blast in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood, said there didn't appear to be any link to international terrorism. He said the second device appeared "similar in design" to the first, but did not provide details.

"We're going to be very careful and patient to get to the full truth here," New York's mayor, Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, said Sunday. "We have more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. Was it a political motivation? A personal motivation? What was it? We do not know that yet."

Cell phones were discovered at the site of both bombings, but no Tannerite residue was identified in the New Jersey bomb remnants, in which a black powder was detected, said the official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to comment on an ongoing investigation.

Authorities said the Manhattan bombing and the blast 11 hours earlier at the site of a 5K race to benefit Marines and sailors in Seaside Park, New Jersey, didn't appear to be connected, though they weren't ruling anything out. The New Jersey race was cancelled and no one was injured.

Officials haven't revealed any details about the makeup of the pressure-cooker device, except to say it had wires and a cellphone attached to it.

Technicians in Quantico, Virginia, were examining evidence from the Manhattan bombing, described by witnesses as a deafening blast that shattered storefront windows and injured bystanders with shrapnel in the mostly residential neighborhood on the city's west side. All 29 of the injured people were released from the hospital by Sunday afternoon.

The explosion left many rattled in a city that had marked the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks only a week earlier and where a United Nations meeting to address the refugee crisis in Syria was scheduled on Monday.

"People didn't know what was going on, and that's what was scary," said Anthony Zayas, an actor who was in the Chelsea neighborhood Saturday night when the bomb went off. "You didn't know if was coming from the subway beneath you, you didn't know if there were other bombs, you didn't know where to go."

Tannerite, which is often used in target practice to mark a shot with a cloud of smoke and small explosion, is legal to purchase and can be found in many sporting goods stores. Experts said a large amount would be required to create a blast like the one Saturday night, as well as an accelerant or other ignitor.

Police and federal spokespeople wouldn't comment on the presence of explosive material recovered at the scene.

The bomb in Manhattan appeared to have been placed near a large dumpster in front of a building undergoing construction, another law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing investigation, told the AP. The second device, described by the same official as a pressure cooker with wires and a cellphone attached to it, was removed early Sunday by a bomb squad robot and New York City police were preparing to blow it up in a controlled explosion later in the day, authorities said.

Homemade pressure cooker bombs were used in the Boston Marathon attacks in 2013 that killed three people and injured more than 260.

Officials solicited tips from the public, telling reporters at a news conference in the New York Police Department's headquarters that they didn't know who set off the bomb or why.

An additional 1,000 state troopers and members of the National Guard were placed at transit hubs and other points throughout New York City and extra police officials were patrolling Manhattan, officials said. Members of the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force were investigating the blast along with New York Police Department detectives, fire marshals and other federal investigators.

Meanwhile, a law enforcement official said federal investigators had discounted a claim of responsibility on the social blogging service Tumblr. Investigators looked into it and didn't consider it relevant to the case, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

Anthony Stanhope, 40, a songwriter who lives a block away from the bombing, said he needed more answers before he could feel safe.

"I think it's terrorism — I don't know what kind. It's some kind of fanaticism, I don't know exactly what it is," he said. "But somebody has an agenda to cause trouble in this country."

Caldwell reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Karen Matthews, Maria Sanminiatelli, Michael Balsamo and Dake Kang in New York, and Eric Tucker and Kevin Freking in Washington contributed to this report.

Five people are being questioned by the FBI in connection with the bomb attack in New York that left 29 people injured.

Authorities say FBI agents pulled over a car on a road in Brooklyn and are questioning the vehicle's occupants as part of the investigation into Saturday's bombing.

Hopefully a quick, positive result for the Authorities.

As it is well known that mainstream prison is a hotbed of radicalisation. It might be time to start building a very secure detention facility right in the centre of the Nevada Desert.

Build it to the template as described in the song Hotel California.

Now reported that the 2nd unexploded bomb had a note with it. The note was written in Arabic. Can they still squirm out of this?

How about this. The wind inadvertently blew the note onto the bomb.

Is the New York Post a site of dubious character ?

If not

A 911 caller issued a chilling warning moments after the Saturday night bomb that rocked Chelsea — saying, “There will be more.’’

“I’m looking at the explosion down the block. There will be more,” the unidentified male caller threatened, law-enforcement sources told The Post Sunday.

The Mayor of NYC says that it's not linked to international terrorism?  Did he recently get a lobotomy?

Read the articles, the title is misleading. The mayor did not say any such thing.

The governor said “At this time there is no evidence of an international terrorism connection with this incident- but it is very, very early in the investigation”. The operative words being “at this time” “no evidence” and “international”.

The mayor said ““It was intentional. It was a violent act. It was certainly a criminal act. It was a bombing. That’s what we know” and, later: “"We're going to be very careful and patient to get to the full truth here…We have more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this”. He at no time said it was not linked to international terrorism.  he is refraining from drawing conclusions until the evidence is in.

No-one has stated it was not terrorism.

Personally I doubt an international group did it as (1) too small in scale for them and (2) none have claimed “credit”. But could very well be home-grown terrorists. These could have been Muslim fundamentalists but could also have had different motivations/agendas as well. It is too soon to say.

New York bombing: five more explosive devices found at railway station

Quote

Five explosive devices have been found in a backpack at a train station in New Jersey as the security alert gripping America ratcheted up in the wake of the Manhattan bombing.

One of the devices exploded when a bomb squad robot tried to disarm it at Elizabeth train station, the local mayor said.

Well I guess the terrorist accomplished their mission. Increased protection for a useless world body that does nothing but spout meaningless horse pucky and empty sanctions. No wonder our boy in North Korea makes jokes of all these so called decades long "sanctions" They have become a rather standing joke like the UN as a whole.

Everybody and their mom admit that it is terrorism!

But terrorism does not = Islamic terrorism does not = jihad does not = ISIS!

Why is that so hard to grasp?

So if it turns out to be terrorism that is linked to Islam, what does it = ?

Everybody is very good at describing what it is not. Nobody is very good at describing what it is.

I think it is too early to say exactly who was behind the bombs and how closely related they were.  This new strand of terrorism using vulnerable individuals is really hard to track.  When attacks are part of organised cells then usually they are easier to identify and expose.

There are arrests every week in the UK concerning suspected terrorists or plots.  Certainly a serious threat at the moment and as many of the culprits were born and raised in the countries where they commit these acts it makes it so hard to identify them.

IF it turns out to be linked to Islam, then it = Islamic (inspired) terrorism!

Surely they have working cctvs covering every street…..if HBO's The Night Of is to be believed…..so how hard can it be to see who approached the dumpster with a bulky package.

My guess would be not to believe an HBO fiction drama,  asked on a BBC fictional drama as a reliable source for the extent of CCTV coverage in NYC. ?

Trump has said that the USA has to get very tuff over these latest bombings.  A view echoed around the world I am sure.  The question is  what do you do, on day one?  Surely the Trumpsters need their guy to tell them the plan.  Or maybe Clinton should tell us her plan?  They won't of course and the excuse will be that they don't want to give anything away to the enemy. The truth is they do not know how to respond and nor do any of the other countries being attacked.  We are dealing with the enemy within.

Of course the action against ISIL in Syria is being intensified but that is not exactly going smoothly, especially  with the USA and the RAF bombing Syrian soldiers by mistake.  They have to persevere though and there seems to be little option for that.

Trump's plan is "secret" so as not to tip off the other side in advance.

I would mostly be interested in what exactly he thinks should be done in addition to what is being currently done. Seems to me much else would be to further curtail US citizens rights would be all that is left. Maybe they should start collecting phone meta data records and mine emails for key words? Just an idea.
