BANGKOK: -- Bangkok police are hunting a Buriram man suspected of driving an 18 wheel truck into the back of a fully laden "song thaew" passenger vehicle yesterday.

The driver of the container truck fled the scene of the fatal accident but a license was found in his cab. Police suspect that they are one and the same namely 57 year old Wijit Bunnam, reported Thairath.

Witnesses in the King Kaew Soi 8 area of Samut Prakarn said the truck careered into the back of the packed song thaew before ending up half on the footpath demolishing two power poles in the process.

One man was found dead under the truck and needed to be cut out of the wreckage. He was later named as 42 year old Prasat Theuakthao from Ubon.

The song thaew had come to rest twenty meters away from the truck.

Twelve injured passengers were rushed to three area hospitals after the accident on Sunday evening.

Police are hunting the man in the license. They suspect that he fell asleep at the wheel as there were no signs of braking on the road.

The owners of these haulage companies (I know two or three of them) instruct their drivers to flee the scene especially if there is property damage or loss of life.

Such instructions would cease immediately if the law is made to arrest the truck owner in the absence of his driver...

The most important issue right now is to help the injured and to adequately

compensate the dead and the damage to property, the driver should be and

will be dealt in a more opportune time, he has nowhere to run, he will get caught

eventually.....

 compensate the dead" ?

Anyone's guess why in Europe the responsibility is with the vehicle OWNER and not the driver. The owner MUST insure his vehicle and if he does not want to be taken to court then he must name/prove who drove the vehicle at the time of incident.

Such stories as here simply never could happen in the 21st century in a civilised country run by common sense laws and people.

But guess who is easier to grill, the rich Thai-Chinese fleet owners of badly or unmaintained trucks/buses or Somchai who drives the coffin on wheels for pocket money?

makes them partners in crime as well. any decent book on traffic rules will tell you that you are expected to provide aid to the people involved in the accident and not abandon the ship yourself.

the responsibility if with the OWNER as the driver is only the agent of the owner. but that does not mean he walks from the the traffic offence. the driver will be taken to task for the offence which has been committed for whatever reason.

to where? shunning responsibility is cowardice.  you have done it , own up and move on with life. that is the right way. running away from the scene does not make the problem go away.

Third world and always will be. No matter how many shopping malls they build.!

what has this to do with the kind of world. for God's sake this is an accident where a cowardly driver skipped the scene.he will be apprehended  sooner or later and taken care off.

for the demised, compensate his family. noway they can be revived but compensate the survivors and dependent and the responsibility should be that of the truck owners or the employers of the driver, who are the PRINCIPAL  in this case.
