I have been trying to return a defective phone back to China from koh Samui, but all the post offices say that an item with a battry in it can no longer be sent by airmail or surface mail,by the Thai postal service, does any one know anything about this or another way to sent it back, with out the high costs of UPS etc

Probably afraid of bomb possibilities....

Afraid of LiOn batteries.

It's not a Samsung Note 7 ?

I know about rules for airfreight but not about the postal rules.

the rules were ( lithium batteries) if it was in the device it was fine  but as a separate battery it is  not allowed...............however on questioning some airlines recently about this many havent a clue and many gave out plain wrong information.

Even better uk Royal Mail   wont take  a lithium ion battery when you go to the post office if its  loose yet i ordered 28..... 18650 li-on batteries recently and they arrived by................. YEP Royal Mail

The mailing of batteries has been prohibited for quite a few months now

I know because in June I tried to mail some laptops & they made me remove the batteries out

This was in Chiang Mai
