Odd, even license plates drive on different days.

Car makers rejoice! We just found out how to double the market!

Might as well have plates ending in 1 ok on 1st, 11th, 21st etc - ending in 2 ok on 2nd, 12th,

Best thing to do is;

1) max facilitation of public transport.

2) Slowly - tax the hell out of gas - starting at 0.1% of retail, rising 0.1%, per WEEK - money to go to pub trans projects, etc.

Bangkok is probably one the worst laid out cities in Asia.   Your choices to get around are limited as many soi's are dead ends.  Because of ineptitude, greed and pettiness, mass transit is not sufficient for a city the size of Bangkok.  No common fare is another issue which speaks volumes about Thailand's "elite"

The most hysterical thing is watching drivers paying tolls to parking lot attendants so they can cut through places with slow traffic during rush hour

Was told that a well known European electronics firm, many years ago, installed a traffic management system in Bangkok.  The RTP found this threatening, so they decided to direct traffic against the lights to confuse the system and render it useless.  Not sure if this is true.  Does anyone know this story ?

Many Bangkok residents have noticed that the traffic in the city has been particularly bad over the past several months with some observing that it does not seem to matter if there is a rain storm or not.

Thousands of new cars pour onto the capital's streets each week.

The above 4 lines make more sense than the rest of the article combined...the number of vehicles is far exceeding the infrastructure in Bangkok...and certainly in Chiang Mai too...simple as that!!!...these "geniuses" can hold meetings, form committees that will "analyze"  the situation, enact more laws, increase penalties, ad nauseum...but it ain't gonna change one damn thing!

Well, you could shift some of the blame on to Yingluck. She introduced the first time car buyer scheme whereby the buyer could benefit from up to 100,000 Baht in tax refunds: http://investvine.com/thailands-first-car-buyer-incentive-scheme-collapsed/

So 1.25 million new cars registered of which only 16% couldn't afford to complete the purchase. That still leaves an awful lot of extra vehicles on the already overcrowded roads.

ok i suggest the traffic light police controller who switches the traffic lights during peak hours please change the lights every 3-5mins for all sides so that everyone can move. not let 1 side go for 20mins-30mins n only allowed 2mins for the otherside. these causes jam.

and kindly re plan some of your highways as well. having 3 or 2 entries converging into 2 or 3 different ways to other highways in 400meters will jam up the whole highway as well

Dozens of major cities around the world have implemented measures to reduce traffic in the downtown cores.

Too bad Thais are to proud to look at what WORKS in other places and try implementing some of those methods.

Get rid of 50% of the taxis to start with!!!

I agree, the main problem are the taxis, just too many for Bangkok. If they are really serious at all, start fining the tuk tuks and taxis that park on the streets as well.

A little too late. I say yes. Facts are clear that there are just too many cars in a city where roads just can't be redesigned to accommodate the volume due to lack of land acquisition laws. A car quota system will only be hijacked by politics. The only solution I see is a proper design mass transportation system and a big improvement in public transportation that are attractive enough to win car owners over.

The system must be seamless in all aspect including connectability, reasonable fares, passenger friendly including the stations, well design carriages and buses, well located stations, sufficient carparks and easy reach for basic shopping.

The project may have to be privatized and given to experts. No way the government can handle a project of such scale and importance.

Didn’t need to get all these so so clever people together could have just asked my granddaughter she could have told them Bangkok roads designed for a maximum of 4 million cars and now over 7 million cars on the Bangkok roads a heavier tax to keep the number of vehicles down for the poor people, and a test or inspection every year for cars older than two years and any failures just crush them get the old scrap cars off the road, no need to set up police checks or tea money collection points, just install cameras all over the roads and on traffic lights to catch the red light jumpers fines issued by computer to car owner non-payments or multi fines cars impounded and crushed after 60 days non-payment.

You re sure not a car owner.

Immediately after this "scheme" went into effect, I began noticing increased traffic/jams in the CM area...politicians (not just in Thailand) enact these laws without any consideration to the long-term consequences...and it ain't gonna get any better, Judy!!!

They won't be able to fix this in-house. So many western countries have already gone through trial and error experiments. Why not send one of the 5 councils abroad to study how other megacities manage? I'm seriously curious if any officials considered they are attempting to reinvent the wheel.

Don't waste the nation's money on pleasure trips and then come back to implement the exact opposite...

Five committees set up, will that be enough ?

They'd better be careful blaming the rain as there's a govt dept with a special name whose job is to produce the stuff !

But NKK,  does this rain making dept actually make any err rain..

and how about that scheme not so many years ago making it super easy and affordable for first car owners to buy a car (in order to try and get rid of surplus to keep FDIs from MNCs pouring in)? action and consequence... action and consequence... it's not that hard of a concept to grasp.

You are far way to smart for these people,.....

On the other hand,?.. 5 committees will each have a budget to spend to whatever they can think of .... ???.....and buy new cars....and some influential people could place family members to have a easy job and a state pension !!!

Yes correct to feed the 5 committees is a great achievement and a lot of people will benefit from this budgets. Only the road traffic situation will get worse.
