Accident Villagers Carry Sick Man Through Torrential Rain for 5 Hours After Road Collapse in Mae Hong

A remote community in Mae Sariang District, Mae Hong Son province, was forced to carry a seriously ill man on a homemade litter, under a bamboo pole, through heavy rain and treacherous conditions for nearly five hours after landslides and flash floods severed all road access to the nearest hospital. The incident occurred late night on 13 May, after continuous downpours triggered flooding and washed away key roads in the area. Villagers in Ban Mae Hia, Saohin sub-district, were unable to summon emergency transport due to the impassable conditions. The patient, identified as Mr Sompong, had been suffering from severe lower abdominal pain due to a hernia that had descended into the scrotal area. He also reported vomiting three times, a mild fever, and a burning sensation below the sternum, all symptoms raising concern for a potentially serious medical condition. With no viable vehicle route to medical care, local residents decided to act. In an extraordinary show of community effort, they carried Mr Sompong on a litter through dense forest and difficult terrain, battling rain and mud throughout the night. The group finally reached the Salachiangtong Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital at 03:00, nearly five hours after their journey began. Medical staff at the rural facility had been coordinating remotely with Mae Sariang Hospital in anticipation of the patient’s arrival. Mr Sompong was immediately attended to, thanks in part to pre-arranged online consultation between local health workers and hospital specialists. This act of heroism once again highlights the resilience of remote communities and the ongoing challenges posed by extreme weather in mountainous regions. Crime Military and Excise Officials Seize Illegal Cigarettes in Sa Kaeo Raids

In a coordinated operation, military personnel from the Burapha Task Force, in collaboration with officials from the Sa Kaeo Excise Department, intercepted two separate attempts to smuggle contraband cigarettes destined for Bangkok. The raids were carried out in Ta Phraya and Aranyaprathet districts, resulting in multiple arrests and the seizure of large quantities of illegal goods. The first operation was conducted by the Ta Phraya Task Force Unit and Border Patrol Police Unit 12, acting on intelligence reports of illicit cigarette trafficking near Ban Noen Sombun, Ta Phraya Subdistrict. Upon arrival at the specified location, authorities apprehended two suspects in possession of a closed-bed vehicle suspected to be used for smuggling. A search of the vehicle revealed 42,810 packs of foreign cigarettes, concealed in the rear compartment. The suspects and evidence were handed over to the Ta Phraya Police Station for legal proceedings. Simultaneously, in Aranyaprathet District, the Khlong Hat Task Force Unit, paramilitary forces from Regiment 13, and officers from Khlong Hat Police Station and the Sa Kaeo Excise Department stopped another suspicious vehicle leaving the Khlong Wa Mai community in Tambon Thap Phrik. A thorough inspection uncovered 10 methamphetamine pills (classified as a Category 1 narcotic), as well as 46,000 packs of untaxed foreign cigarettes and counterfeit products. During interrogation, the driver admitted to being hired by Cambodian nationals to transport the contraband across the border via natural routes, with the goods intended for distribution in Bangkok. He claimed to receive 12,000 baht per delivery. However, the operation was thwarted before he could complete the delivery. The suspect and all seized items were transferred to Khlong Nam Sai Police Station in Aranyaprathet for further investigation and prosecution. Authorities confirmed that operations to combat smuggling and cross-border illegal trade will continue, with increased surveillance in high-risk border areas. Two Cambodian nationals have filed a police complaint on 14 May, against a well-known Thai vocational-style influencer and his associates, accusing them of physically assaulting them inside a prominent shopping mall in the Samrong area. The victims insist they did nothing wrong and deny any links to a gang known as “BK Khmer”.
