Nice knowing you, Porn! Thai students in New Zealand asked to ditch their dirty nicknames

BANGKOK: -- Thai nicknames like Poo, Pee, and Porn are common when spoken in the local tongue, but when these young Thais go study abroad, a girl named Watchaporn may just give her classmates a wrong impression.

 

The students with questionable nicknames — be it Ball, Chit or Porn — are being asked to change a "culturally acceptable" names by Thai study abroad agency Smart NZ Education Centre, according to New Zealand Herald.

 

The agency said they're asking six out of every ten students who apply to study in New Zealand to consider adopting a new nickname for "smoother cultural integration."

Oh, this is just plain silly and wrong. Why shouldn't New Zealanders be exposed to all the Poos and Vaginas (I kid you not - I know a female lecturer named this!) and Porns who dwell in Thailand? These names reflect Thai culture and should be proudly proclaimed!

What about Supaporn, lol?  We had a Japanese international student  staying with us here in NZ whose name was 'Fuka'.  She had to change that.

Also there was a Thai girl called 'Khun' and she also had to change her name.

One of my favourites is the male name, Supa-git (Super-Git)!

Way back in the 90s my Thai GF's nickname was Porn. I never told anyone in NZ about that, because even then PC was everywhere.

IMO it is wise to ask them to use a different name. It would cause too much embarrassment to them to see Kiwi's reaction to the real thing.

I had two students called Nop (pronounced Nob) and Kunt (Pronounced Gant).

 

Nob and Kunt were surprisingly nice boys.

If you can't read or hear that name without giggling or worse, well that's really very sad. Says  more about those who can't cope with the names than it does about those who quite innocently named them, or those who bear those names.

 

After all, I believe "John" in North American slang means variously a lavatory or a prostitutes client, but I have never felt the need to change my name.

Considering that the word porn and the name Porn aren't even pronounced the same way? Would the mere utterance of the word "pee" really cause such a stir among any group of people above the age of say, four years old?

 

I don't know, I've never been to NZ but most of the people I've met from there seem to be a bit more reasonable than this Busy Betty BS.

I knew a Supapporn Tiityhornkuul, kid you not. Not sure about the spelling now but this is how it was pronounced.

Hmm, the nick names usually comes from their parents/grand parents.

I know one kid nicknamed Satang as his parents did not have any money when he was borne...

I have a friend nicknamed Ball as he liked to play with a football as a baby.

I know many Porn as their full names are things like; Amporn, Waraporn, Nathaporn, Pacharaporn and so on.

My friend has that name, he was laughed at when he study abroad by everyone when he introduce his name, even the teachers raised their eyebrow and couldn't hold back their smirk. So yes apparently its a big deal with westerners who are not accustom to Thai nicknames.

My French friend's wife is a lady from Ukraine and her family name was Vagina. Changed her name as soon as got married .

Pornanong Patlum is a very good, famous and good looking young lady Thai golfer on the LPGA. 

If the LPGA did not asker her to change her name why should any Thai take heed of this BS from NZ.

 

I only thought it was Ostriches that had their heads in the sand (mataphorically) not Kiwis.....or can you not say Kiwi any more  for a person from NZ. 

I know we are not supposed to say Packie, Chink, Darky, Golliwog and maybe Abo or Auzzie...but I can still type them as examples..... :)

Just goes to show how naive we/some Farang are:-

My step daughters given name is Wichayaporn - the suffix appears in many Thai names hence the nickname "Porn" (Not hers).

My Mother in Law's nickname is Pong (she definitely does not stink - a very nice person)

My Brother in Law's nickname is Dumb (one of the smartest Thais I know)

and so on!

 

IMHO -- This NZ School really needs to get it's Cultural Philosophy in order if it wants to maintain Foreign enrollment!

Yes wrong, but sometimes better for the kids. I know one waitress; her name was Poo.

One day this customer says to her. Your name means Sh-t in English. The poor cried. The other expats, kicked the guy

out of the bar. And we explained in a nicer way to her. We then had a contest for a new nick name. 500 baht per name choice.

There were 18 names, picked by the Expats. She got 9,000 baht and a new name when working in the bar. Penny.

Some people are stupid, and not polite. Anyway the girl was happy, with her 9,000 baht and new Farang name.
