PM Prayut calls for more tourism development to help tackle inequality

It's just all so much rhetoric.

If the PM is serious about trying to improve tourism he has to look at the lack of infrastructure which exists in places like Phuket. It's a very beautiful island located in a tropical environment which guarantees the weather in a period when northern countries are buried under a foot of snow every year and inhabitants want somewhere warm to escape to.

Phuket can offer great hotels, but no efficient means of exploring the island. There are no buses or trams, no taxis other than individuals using private cars without meters and an abundance of Daihatsu vans with the back and sides sliced off and a row of seats fitted. Neither of them is insured for passengers and tuk-tuks especially are hardly the kind of transport you would want to tour the island in.

It beggars belief that the PM seems to think this is acceptable. He seriously needs to take a trip himself to somewhere like the Italian or French Rivieras or Spain and Portugal to see how they organize things. Maybe then he'll understand what needs to be done to attract visitors.

How does tourism address inequality, exactly?

Right? This is a thin smoke screen, and it's politics as usual: offer a solution to inequality that won't affect the existing structure of wealth distribution.

Barstools? I rarely drink alcohol....when i visited family upcountry they had a "barstool" for me to sit on, made of wood and 4" high...is easy when grilling a fieldmouse i guess.

Poor young farm people with no education hook up with one or more wealthy older Farang and get an income equal to a doctor or lawyer.

They could start by eliminating dual prices everywhere...example; Koh Samet - Thai citizen 40฿ / Foreigner 200฿

Just a suggestion...but everybody (including myself) knows that it will not change any time soon.

That's rubbish that you write here.

I have just been to several places where "foreigners", as you say, pay more than Thais. All of the "foreigners" (about 6 people) I was with got in for free or at Thai price. I had to pay "foreign" price most places despite speaking Thai, showing my driving license and a government employment card.

These foreigners were the grown up children of Thais who emigrated several years ago. They can't speak Thai, don't have Thai ID or Thai passport but because of their skin colour were never asked for ID.

They should change the word "foreigner" to "white skins".
