Dental crown advice please

cooked

Recommended Posts

Hi. I have had two dental crowns fitted by a local dentist in Buriram and am happy with what I got. The first two I got required 5 visits and the one I am getting now requires four.

So, first question: is ‎฿15 000.- a reasonable price, initial examination and X-ray, root canal and fitting?

Second: I have read that a dental crown is normally done in two visits or even one, am I getting special treatment?

Thanks

I had a crown fitted to one of my molars last year in Bangkok, no root canal work and the cost was 18000 I think for two or three visits (can't remember exactly).

I'd consider that an excellent price bearing in mind the root canal work can be expensive, I had a root canal done to one of my front teeth 14 years ago and the cost in the Channel Islands for that alone was £600.

15K for RC and crown? makes me a bit suspicious….normal market price in Bkk is around 24K for the same.

There are many different types of crown materials…ceramic non precious is the cheapest…although metal is good for a grinding rear molar and if you like your nuts and if they offer it.

Root canals are dicey if performed by the wrong hands….I would read up on antibiotics to take so as to prevent any infection….sometimes a bad root canal can create bacteria that mess with heart functions.

I took some Clindamycin for 5 days after mine just as a precaution…I hate antibiotics but just had to do it as I was paranoid about infection.

Here's some good reading:

Even in Bangkok the price can be much lower at an independent local dental shop - but as mentioned you take your chances when using for more advanced procedures - Thailand is a land of specialists and that can be very good for dental treatment but may mean paying more for someone with enough patients to earn there living as a specialist.

Thanks, interesting read. Looking back, my dentist went through all the procedures mentioned in the article so I have no worries there, and crowns I had put in three years ago are still ok. For the last job, instead of the initially proposed four visits, I went six times, for the same price. So I imagine she is doing a good job and she has a certificate from Germany for herself (and her husband) on the wall.

I've had fourteen crowns done in Chiang Mai over the years, and have friends who have had crowns installed.  Those of us who have  multiple visits and a dentist with a "slow go" approach do the best.  I always go for metal crowns or those with metal backing because I'm afraid I'm abusive -- like to gnaw on rib bones, etc.  Come to think of it, every time I've broken a permanent tooth, it's involved gnashing on bones.  Hmm......

15k baht is way too cheap for an RCT and Dental Crown Combo. Would it be possible that a Dental Filling was quoted to you instead of a crown? I suppose dental work is cheaper in Buriram compared to Bangkok but then again, two years ago i had a root canal treatment with dr. punchita at bangkok smile dental for my premolar tooth. The rct alone cost me 9k baht. When the dentist told me I needed a dental crown because my tooth was too weak to handle fillings after the rct, I requested for a top-quality brand, so they gave me a Zirconia Crown, which cost me an additional 16k baht. So in total, I paid about 26k baht for everything including medications, etc. But the thing is, up to this day, I remain satisfied with the results...I can eat my favorite foods (steaks and ribs) without worrying that my root-canal treated tooth is going to break. Clearly, a dental crown that's made with zirconia is as strong as it's advertised.
