I have overstayed my 30 day tourist visa by 14 days and have been in touch with immigration. I am an australian citizen with a Thai wife, we travel back to Australia on the 7th of Decemeber (she has been granted a spouse visa). I have been informed by immigration Thailand that i will be required to pay 500 baht per day for my overstay (that would equat to about 10,000 as it has been 14 days) has anyone else been in a similar situation - forgive my ignorance but do you think they would reduce this as i only need to stay another 2 weeks???? :o cheers, any suggestions would be appreciated.

From the Immigration Act:

Section 81 : Any alien who stay in the Kingdom without permission or with permission expired or revoked shall be punished with imprisonment not exceeding two years or a fine not exceeding 20,000 Baht or both.

If you get checked by police before you get to the airport on December 7th you will be arrested and brought to court, where a judge will decide on your penalty within the limits specified by law.

Otherwise, you pay the fine at the airport when leaving, 500 Baht per day but maximum 20,000 Baht. So far, there has been no report of arrest and imprisonment when an overstayer made it to the airport without getting arrested before then by the police.

A border run would have been cheaper :o

Not wishing to start a bashing session, but just why did you knowingly overstay when the fix is so simple?

BTW Do NOT attempt to fix this by doing a border run now (buses have been stopped and overstayers removed to detention).

Go to immigration cap in hand, they may give you an extension to the 7th if you show a ticket and pay the overstay fine to date. Gonna cost you the fine plus 1900 for the extension.
