Why do most people NOT smoke weed even though it's legal?
The son of a good friend of mine smoked a lot in his youth continuously until 30. It made him talk too much, he became a poor listener, then a few months ago he started having what he described as 'episodes', paranoia, a sense of detachment, distorted faces. It was very hard to maintain a conversation, he felt he was breaking down, his personality dissolving. Sounds like a bad acid trip to me, the scariest thing was the episodes could last for a day or two. He saw a psychiatrist who warned him of possible psychosis, scared to death, he managed to quit. Since then, he has recovered, the episodes have stopped, hopefully he's on the mend. Knowing him a long time, I'm sure he must have been terrified because he was a committed smoker. On another issue, back in the late sixties and early seventies, the UK was awash with a variety of cannabis aromas, sweet smelling Nepalese hash, Moroccan, pungent grass, etc, but now there's just a rather unpleasant, uniform smell emitting from all the tokers, as if they had been standing next to burning savannah soaked in insecticide. I look back on the early 70s with fondness, playing chess with friends whilst under the influence, whilst listening to great music by groups like Man ( 'Never say Nup to Nepalese'). Chess moves took hours as all the permutations drifted through one's mind, but those days had to stop, time to get ourselves together, lol. -

How do you visit Japan properly ?
I went in winter time a few years ago and absolutely loved it. We got JR Rail Passes in Gold Glass (1st class) which were amazing value. Unlimited rail travel, just go in to any JR office when you arrive and make reservations for all your trains at no cost. If you decide to add more journeys just go in to a JR rail office and book them whenever you like. Properly unlimited. A few days in Tokyo, then Mt Fuji. Two hour Shinkansen to Otsuki (which gives great views of Mt Fuji) then a cute Fujikyuko line train to Kawaguchi. We stayed close to Lake Kawaguchi which is stunningly beautiful with Mt Fuji as a backdrop. Just Google it, highly recommended. From there was passed through Tokyo and went up to Sapporo. We took the train but the Shinkansen doesn't yet go all the way to Sapporo (under construction) but it boots it up to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto which is on Hokkaido Island, then you transfer to an old slow diesel train the rest of the way. It really surprised us to be on such a train in Japan, but it was a pretty journey. Sapporo is a great city, the snow was incredible - you can ski if you want or go to mountain parks and mess around (which we did as we had young kids). Beautiful clean, deep, powdery snow. My favourite bit was drinking Sapporo in Sapporo on the side of a mountain in a mountain cabin. After that went back for a night in Tokyo then Shinkansen up to Kyoto which was a totally different experience and only a 2hr 15m journey. Beautiful old city, old temples, geishas, fantastic restaurants. Again, highly recommended. It was one of the best trips I have done and my kids still talk about it and would love to go back. Every city had a completely different culture and feel to it and they were very different to each other. Just make sure you buy a JR rail pass before you go, then you can travel around the country in comfort and style and use as many trains as you like (only a few restrictions). And the Shinkansens are awesome. This is Lake Kawaguchi and the cute little train that takes you the rest of the way locally after you get off the Shinkansen. (Not my photos) -

Stupid is as stupid does. I guess that is why they call it dope. When I was much younger I had a friend who was constantly high on ganja even though he had a very high IQ. One night while high as usual he decided to clean his 12 gauge shotgun in his parents basement. Unfortunately, in his severely degraded mental capacity due to his being stoned, he forgot that there was a shell in the chamber. A while later his parents heard a very loud boom and ran down the basement. He must have been looking down the barrel when it went off as he was decapitated. More than fifty five years later I still morn the loss of this friend. I know this would have never happened if he was in his right mind. -
