BANGKOK: -- Thai authorities have put the cart before the horse when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs). Excited by the huge potential of the new technology, they have neglected the structural economic changes necessary to its realisation here.

The Thailand Development Research Institute recently cautioned against the policy of support "pure" rather than hybrid EVs, saying the country is not yet ready.

The Finance Ministry is set to waive customs tax on imported Evs, for which excise tax could also be cut to 5-10 per cent of the vehicle's price.

There is only one revolution the good people of Thailand should be gearing up for, it is about time and personally I hope they bloody hurry up and get on with it.

get ready for lots of electrocutions from the chargers if they are installed like other  outdoor  devices

never get this guff on electric cars when they  still have to produce the electricity to start with.

How can they think they can put electric in vehicles when half the time they can't get/keep electric in homes?

"...The EV sector has been hailed as a potential new "S-curve" industry for Thailand, featuring innovation and high technology that help boost the economy and replace traditional sectors that are now flagging..."

Maybe, before we all get too excited over this, we should just hope like hell that foreign car-makers even decide to invest in Thailand, and not look at more stable countries elsewhere in the region !!!

They can always buy those made in China batteries and chargers...

apparently the Thai EV cars will have batteries supplied by Samsung, selas the price was very cheap!

And wait for the huge congestion these cars will cause when the battery is empty.

Also they won't have aircon so are useless.

Maybe they should add they Thai roads with yearly flooding are also not ready for Electric Vehicles.

When has Thailand ever been ready or proactive when it comes to anything new apart from finding new ways to scam people ?
