I've had a bad cold (in chest and sinuses) for 2 weeks and it now appears that I have pus coming out of my right eye...never seen this before...

I figure to let the cold run itself out in the usual fashion and that the eye pus will sort itself out as well...

should I be concerned and seek treatment? will I go blind in the affected eye if not treated?

thanx...

I think letting the cold run it's course is a fabulous plan, what could go wrong? After all a trip to the doctor for a check up and a prescription for antibiotics might cost something on the order of 1000-2000 baht (private). Compared to your health or your life that is a high price to pay, up to you to decide if you are worth it.

If it gets too bad just take a couple of paracetamon. Maybe buy some cough drops. You'll be all right. Lungs and eyes aren't that important anyways.

well...I'm not worried about death or dying but bein' blind would certainly be a drag...

and anyone can self medicate with antibiotics...I'm just wondering if the pus discharge is a symtom of something that anyone is familiar with...

but thanks fer yer 'help' anyway...

You should have just left it with the recommendation to seek a medical consult.

Antibiotics  might not help. The infection may be due to a virus, mold, fungus or parasite? Antibiotics do not work on the aforementioned. Many infections no longer respond to antibiotics. If the subject is of good health and has no underlying chronic conditions, then the typical respiratory  infection can and will run its course.

However, as the subject is complaining of pus in the eye, there is a good possibility that he has an infection distinct from his respratory infection and it could be any number of infections ranging from a sexually transmitted disease to conjunctivitis.  If the discharge is a nice pudding green consistency  and there is swelling of the eye,  it would be a sure bet that someone was being naughty or incurred third party collateral splatter because that  would be  a symptom of classic gonorrhea. Who knows? I certainly don't. The subject may have a  viral induced severe sinusitis which has spread to the eyes, in which case he could indeed be one of the very rare cases where blindness can be a complication.

Only one type of guidance is valid here. OP must visit a qualified health professional. It is impossible to diagnose and treat with the limited information provided and in the absence of an underlying medical history. As I understand it, OP is at an advanced age. This makes it more important that medical care be sought as the elderly are more likely to suffer complications.

My previous post was completely sarcastic. Of course a medical consult would be the only prudent course of action. See a doctor, please....today sometime. It is not normal.

this is horrible...there is a plea for help and then there are accusations of sexual preversion with gonnocchocal implications...

for shame...

(and then tutsi drags his arse back to the sofa where the MiL is calmly waiting: 'yew won't let them hurt me, will you?')

Certainly you should not ignore a discharge of pus from the eye. That is not due to the cold. It is probably conjunctivits which can be either bacterial or viral, bit if actual white or yellow pus more chance it is bacterial.

thanks sheryl...there's not much to with do conjunctivitis except to take antibiotics and do some eyedrops and I'm havin' a hard time seein' my laptop screen because of all the pus...I'll monitor the situation fer a bit...I'm havin' a party over here right now and the antibiotics won't work with all the drinkin'...and I'm not ready to 'get under the covers' yet...

my immune system must be weakened in general...that stupid job that I just finished in saudi was more murderous than I had thought but it got me the dough that I needed to stop once and for all...same thing happened in VN 5 years ago with the stroke, I'm just not as tough as I useta be with the diabetes and all...and gettin' old don't help none neither...

bad colds and conjunctivitis seem to go together...

Need to be the right antibiotics and the right eye drops.

And unless there is rapid response to the initial drugs, at least a gram stain should be taken of the pus to help narrow downwhat bug is responsible

the pus stopped after about a day and my vision is not affected...the cold persists but is slacking off, seems to be pursuing the regular cycle...looks like I'm gonna havta expect things like this to happen as I get older...
