Germany: Outrage over suicide of Syrian terror suspect

LEIPZIG: -- German officials are under fire over the suicide of Syrian terror suspect Jaber Albakr, whose death deprives authorities of precious information.

The refugee, 22, hanged himself with his T-shirt in a prison cell in Leipzig on Wednesday night, in between half-hourly checks.

Facing calls to step down, Saxony’s State Justice Minister Sebastian Gemkow, a member of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s conservatives, told a news conference the suicide “should never have happened”.

But he denied authorities had made any mistakes.

“Conversations were held with the suspect to get a picture of his personality,” Gemkow told reporters.

“Later, an assessment was made by the psychological service of the detention centre. No acute suicide risk was determined.”

The Syrian, who arrived in Germany in February last year, appeared calm and was monitored at 15 minute intervals. These were lengthened to 30 minutes despite Albakr pulling a lamp in his cell out of its fitting and tampering with a plug socket.

Albakr’s defence lawyer, Alexander Huebner, has denounced a “judicial scandal”, saying that he is “totally shocked” that something like this could happen.

“I knew he was nervous and up to something,” Huebner said.

“He didn’t behave normally. That worried me. Of course, when you get the news, you are shocked and you ask yourself if you have done everything you can or if you could have done more – if you should have stayed longer with him at the prison and talked to him for longer. “

Huebner said Albakr’s suicidal tendencies had been well documented, adding that his client decided to go on hunger strike directly after his arrest on Monday.

Al Bakr, suspected of plotting to bomb an airport in Berlin, was the target of a two-day manhunt after explosives were found at an apartment in the city of Chemnitz.

He was found in Leipzig where a group of fellow Syrians had tied him up at their flat and alerted the police.

Pretty Interesting that his fellow Syrians were the ones to tie him up and alert the Police.  Not an everyday occurrence.

I wouldn't believe it, added by authorities to convince the population that Syrian refugees are not terrorists.

He must have fooled you, then. Similarly to the Asylum Interview Process when you must have asked him if he had any terrorist tendencies... you did ask him that, right?

Too bad this guy hung himself before giving up some good information.    I am not affected by his death, as he does not sound like he was a very good guy, except maybe to the terrorists. I just hope that some more of these kind of sleaze bags get arrested and we can get quality information from them before they are able to  kill their cowardly selves..

Geezer

Perhaps you are the one troubled..........

Why would you say that?

As you know, I am anti Muslim.

However, to express joy at someone hanging themselves is, er, worrying.

So what is your point?

No of course not.

To re-iterate, I am anti Muslim and would like them ALL out of Europe.

BUT, I respect rule by law. I will not be pulled down to their level.

I am surprised the Germans screwed this up. There are probably others who will now escape.

Are you American by chance?

Thats not very civilised is it?

Actually, I have noticed several posts from you.

Are you OK? You seem troubled....

He seems very normal to me, unlike you who seems more upset about this terrorist killing himself than by the atrocities he was planning to commit. There seems to be a kink in the dna of you lefty/PC types.

I guess I just come from a higher civilisation than you. I don't think the American ( or Shariah ) way is doing much good ?. I am neither a lefty nor PC. I don't like Muslims. However, there is not much Neanderthal DNA in me either ?.

Finally, I got suspended for 14 days after expressing my feelings following the Brussels atrocity where I lost someone. I'm quite pro German but abhor schadenfreude.

Germany open their arm to refugees and now the plot is on the way the tactic would be to find someone and mention the terrorist word so the security is focusing on that person while they could carry out a more powerful terrorist attack. What could be expected from war torn people.

They will attack even if you would be good to them all they know is war.
