BANGKOK: -- Mourners arriving on river transport to the Sanam Luang area broke out in some welcome smiles this morning.

They were greeted by Ambler the sniffer dog on duty to ensure their security, reports Thairath.

Ambler, a four year old female dog, was with her handlers sniffing any suspect packages around the Tha Chang jetty and surrounding areas.

Those who saw her could forget their grief for a while. She is on patrol from 6 to 9am and 6 to 9pm each day along with a bomb disposal team from the navy and army security personnel.

A large security presence of soldiers and police is in the Sanam Luang area all night to ensure the security of the large number of visitors to the Grand Palace and surrounding areas.

Many visitors are in the city to show their respects after the passing of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

as an aside, i suspect the dog was trained and named outside the kingdom, as "Ambler" is essentially unpronounceable by thai standards.

I'm glad they announced when the dog will be on duty. Would be bombers will make sure they don't arrive there at those times. My brain hurts!!

Trained to sniff out envelopes, take possession and return same to the feet of the master.  A Goodo given as a reward and slice of the action for Rin Tin Tin.

Note to self: writing down when they are on patrol......... :post-4641-1156693976:

It won't help you.  In this climate and humidity  the dog is only good for an hour at best until it needs some quiet time and rest.  The dogs are on call 24/7 and will respond when called for.  They are not working 3 hours straight per shift.
