Yingluck appears in Court

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Ms Yingluck Shinawatra said she has received official notification demanding 35 billion baht compensation but said she would use all legal channels to fight what she described is illegitimate order and unfair practice.

Ms Yingluck made the comment as she appeared at the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders for the fifth hearing of testimony by defending witnesses.

Wearing in black and with tearful eyes, the former prime minister said nobody could understand her position if they did not get such illegitimate order and unfair practice.

She said she would not make further comments as now the country is still in the mourning atmosphere.

But she insisted she would resort to all legal channels to fight and would give a press conference in due process and time.

35 billion baht, 1 bullion US$. wonder if that money will pay back some of the borrowed money. i would bet she will be having to visit a sick relative overseas fairly soon. army will be happy to see her go. she is still very popular.

considering 70% of tax money is spent on Bangkok and that 0.01% own 50% of Thailand's assets i would have thought that the rice pledging scheme was only fair

Thai junta fines former PM Yingluck, orders assets seized over failed rice scheme

Thailand's ousted prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra said the military junta that overthrew her has ordered her assets seized and fined her THB35 billion baht over a rice subsidy scheme critics say hemorrhaged billions of dollars.

The scheme, which paid farmers above market rates for their rice, was a flagship policy of Yingluck's administration and helped sweep her to office in a 2011 general election.

After her 2014 overthrow, Yingluck was charged with criminal negligence over the rice subsidy scheme and is now fighting the charges in court.

I am all for charges being pressed against anyone where there is a reasonable suspicion of illegal / criminal activity whether some people are alienated or not. The suspect should of course be given legal representation and a transparent, fair trial, heard by impartial judge(s).

However if that is the case here, then I am the president of England.

What have I said that you take umbrage to?

So.....if this is not a witch hunt and marks some kind of political accountability does it mean that all corrupt politicians and army personnel guilty of lining their own pockets at tax payers expense will have to pay similar compensation ? Or is this going to be selective accountability ?

Fact is ......if it's a good thing then it should be applied to all regardless of political affiliation or military rank.

Oh....sorry. For a minute I forgot TIT. Accountability and fairness do not yet share the same bed.

unfair practice. ",thats politics for you,it would have been better for  you,

if you hadn't taken notice of your brother, and where is he when you need

him.left you with the shit end of the stick.

plenty of stupid things. Why should she not get a fair trial? She has the best lawyers? The government does not dictate to the courtts. But of course the red shirt propaganda says so!

Hmmm let me think.

Could it be for a start because the compensation demand was made by a single person without any trial at all?

Let us know if you have any further doubts.

Thailand the newest banana republic. btw, where did Mr. Pryuth get millions on a civil servant/military salary?

Edited by VN4now

I am not against the aims of the rice pledging scheme to help the lives of the poor farmers

but this was done in such a simplistic and corrupt manor it was doomed to failure from the

start and she should bear responsibility as she was head of the program. As the families

vast wealth appears to be from corrupt transactions and business deals I have no issues

with confiscating it. Of course I would like a full and proper forensic accountants report

on the corruption. How the program failed the farmers and who really got the money.

This is where Prayuth and his gang were smarter, they granted themselves an amnesty for anything they will do wrong, Rewrote the constitution and have built a shield around themselves making them totally untouchable.

Thailand will make little progress when governmental policy differences are made into criminal matters by subsequent administrations...something usually seen only in Banana Republics...oh right.

wow, you've been under a rock for the last decade, haven't you?

No they are about right. 5% is spent on Issan area. You see the dichotomy facing Thailand. A some stage that buffalo is going to stand up for itself. An outcome to this Yingluck saga is she becomes a martyr or develops into Aung San Suu Kyi. Hard times ahead.

There is NO check or balance for the Junta.  They will never be held accountable for anything do ever in Thailand.  It is not fair that her money is seized by such people.  You are just transferring her money to them.  What is the point ?  How does that help you ?

Gamini must have missed the revelation by a former judge of the highest court that there were judgements compromised by political convenience. Heavily tinted yellow glasses.

I suggested two years ago for her to run while she still could. To late now.

hmmmm. 1 billion $ divided by 5 generals + a bonus for the junta leader  a very good year indeed.
