2 questions about this.

1. is it possible to extend the visa validity by 30 days? If so when should it be done? 15 days before? 7? any other time permitted?

2. For the 1 year extension of stay, when should it be applied for? 15 days before expiry of the visa? Any other time permitted?

Thanks

1. There is not 30 day extension for non immigrant visas of any category.

2. Unless you are attending a university or some other type of formal school you will only get a 90 day extension. Language schools  are informal schools. You can apply for the extension during the last 30 day of the 90 day entry from the visa.

Thanks Ubonjoe.

Does that mean I can apply for the extension ANYTIME during the last 30 days? e.g. a few days before it expires?

What happens if I apply 30 days before? Will they stamp the extension at the time I apply? or will I have to return 30 days later to get the extension stamp?

When applying for the conversion from 30 days to non-O they accepted the application and told me to return on the day the entry stamp expired and told me I could not leave the country within that time. However in this next instance I want to leave the country for Christmas and New Year so don't want to have such a restriction.

Not sure what you did the first time. It sounds like you obtained 90 day visa entry by doing a conversion to it a non immigrant visa. You had to wait for the application to be approved and then got the visa and entry stamps.

The next time you will be applying for a extension of stay and it should be approved on the date you apply.

If you want to travel while you have the extension you will need to get a re-entry permit to keep it valid. A single re-entry cost 1000 baht and a multiple 3800 baht.

First time it was a conversion from tourist visa to Non-O ED.

I know to get the re-entry permit when I fly out for Christmas and was planning to come back in 3 or 4 Jan with the visa expiring on 8 Jan and apply for the 1 year extension. But I don't want to leave it too late to get the 1 year extension if they require 15 days prior.

Or should I apply before I leave and then get the re-entry permit on the extension? I don't want to bugger up the possibility of leaving as happened on the conversion.

There is no 15 day requirement for an extension application.

I think it would be best for you to apply for your extension before you leave. Getting back on the 3 or 4th would be a little to close to the 8th of January especially since it is a Sunday.
