Booze at the Border

Recommended Posts

The border area at Poipet has an impressive selection of spirits at roughly half the price in Thailand. The cost of the Cambodian visa for a foreigner is 1,800 baht, but any Thai can freely cross the border and return with one bottle.

I truly believe that all the single malt whiskeys are genuine, mainly because they all have engraved bottle codes, the crock is stamped, it taste right and the market for these odd named whiskeys is not big enough to make high quality counterfeits.

That said, there are fake alcohol in the border area, but more the run of the mill kind of stuff, like Ballantine’s, Bombay Gin and Chivas Regal. The price alone is a strong indicator they are fake. You can get 1 liter of Bombay Sapphire Gin for 370 baht and 1 liter of Ballantine’s for 400 baht.

Amazing Cambodia!

Yes,  had an amazing experience buying hooch in Poipet.  Bought an amazing bottle of whiskey for a wedding in Thailand.  It was so smooth and tasty.  Cannot remember the name sadly.  Went to two shops in two different casinos.  One had prices in USD the other was THB.  Thought it odd that they were insisting of charging THB, so went to the one charging USD.  Service and prices were much better as you might imagine.

A lot of the booze is fake. I saw Jack Daniels cheaper there cheaper than I could have bought it back home.  Impossible if the real stuff. But it looked absolutely real.

Yes, not everything that shin is gold. Since we were a large group I could shop around and did the big mistake and bought a bottle from one of the smaller street shops right across the border. It burns like acid and stings like poison. STAY AWAY from the smaller shops!

What I bought from the larger casinos all feel and taste like the real thing.

The pictures are from one of these casino shops.

Not sure if it is such a bargain if there is a high likelihood it is fake and could kill or blind you!

The high price for the single malt whisky in Thailand was my incentive to try my luck at shopping across the border, but after discovering that one of the bottles were a fake, I tend to agree with you.

The fake bottle was bought at one of the smaller shops at the border. It had a burning taste to it and gave me 2 days with a tinkling feeling in both hands and feet. Horrible stuff.
