BANGKOK: -- Demand for black clothes remains high with a major hypermarket chain reporting fivefold demand throughout its outlets, and prompting the Department of Internal Trade to seek cooperation from the manufacturers to increase production.

The director-general of the Department of Internal Trade Mrs Nanthawan Sakuntanak revealed that there are still shortages of black and also white apparel in many parts of the country which has forced the department to ask for the cooperation of clothing manufacturers, dyers and tailors to increase production during the mourning period.

At the same time, the department has also assigned officials to make checks on prices to ensure that no sellers take advantage of the situation to hike up prices, she said.

Yesterday the Department of Internal Trade has coordinated with major retailer Tesco Lotus to prepare 55,000 free black shirts for low income members of the public through its 109 branches.

The first of these were made through its 9 branches in Bangkok where it is reported that a large number of people had arrived since 6.00 am in the morning even before they opened to wait for these shirts.

Within only 15 minutes of opening its doors, all allocated shirts were given away.
