Hi , I know this has probably been answered many times and I have looked but can anyone tell me me if it is ok to get a 30 arrival visa then extend whilst in Thailand? The reason I ask is because my return ticket is later than 30 days by 12 days. I am flying from London with Thai airways, could I be refused boarding or entry into Thailand on arrival?

I have never overstayed in the in the years I have traveled or lived here and I know I should probably travel to Cardiff to get a tourist visa ( I'm in Bristol) but just very busy until I travel next week and would prefer just to extend whilst there.

You can certainly extend it once you are here, no problem.  As you have guessed the main issue is the airline, they could well deny boarding without an onward ticket within 30 days.  Easiest solution to that is to buy a cheap one way ticket out, you ought to be able to get something for not much more than THB 1000.

The cheapest option out of Thailand for a phoney ticket is normally Bangkok / Yangon with Air Asia. The last time i flew out of London (Heathrow) without a Visa i was not asked to pove an onward ticket but it was not Thai Airways.

In your position, I would find the time to go to Cardiff to pick up a tourist visa. Assuming you have an appointment, the round trip, including the wait time for the visa is about 2 hours. I am willing to take risks when the standard methods are truly inconvenient, but the efficient Cardiff consulate seems quite a convenient option.

I went to Thai Visa office in Cardiff last July with an appointment time and the visa was Issued within 15 minutes of my completing the application form after my arrival. There is street car parking bays nearby so just ensure you have some coins. Remember to take your Passport and £25.

I assume the OP is British and therefore talking about "Visa Exempt" and not "Visa On Arrival".  But are VOA visitors eligible for the extension also?

No

They can only get 7 days to leave the country.

I think that as long as you have a round trip ticket, they aren't too concerned about the times, unless they are ridiculously out of whack.  I routinely have done what you propose to do. USA citizen here.  On most of my trips I never knew how long I would stay and when my next contract would pop up.  I didn't care what return date I would pick.  I think 4 times I was booked for return well over one month after the 30 days, and twice I had an open ended return.  The open ended return seemed fool proof but I decided it wasn't worth the extra money since EVA basically didn't charge for changing a return flight.  I have only gone to Thailand and entered via the Visa exempt 30 day method.  As things played out I made a border run as needed. Did that a few times over the years.  One year a few years back I just did the 7 day extension at the Jomtien office.  Now, you can get a 30 day extension at the local office.

A visa on arrival is only for 15 days after paying 2000 baht for it and is only for those from 19 countries. You got a visa exempt entry.
