For Driver Licence purposes, Dept of Land Transport in M.Buriram accept Residency Certs issued by Police. Cost of Res Cert from Police ? .... up to you. Cop smiled at my 200baht donantion.

So, you might wish to check whether your local DLT will accept Res Cert from Police, rather than Immi ?

So much easier than going via Immi for Res Cert. In fact, Buriram Immi will not issue Res Cert unless you first have a letter from DLT explaining why you need Res Cert. Sounds easy right. Nahh ....

DLT refuse to write such letter 555555555555555. I believe a Yellow Book is also accepted in lieu of a Res Cert.

Most expats up here renewing their 5 year licence are not required to do the video or physical driving test. Just the colour test, pull the sticks test and peripheral vision test. A victory for commonsense.

I drove forward between pile of poles for about 20m and stopped at the end, then had to reverse all the way back without hitting them. Then had to park in a bay marked out with poles, which was smaller than my car . Had to point this out to the guy and he adjusted them so the car would fit !! Then 2 minutes driving in a loop over 2 tiny humped bridges and back to start. 10 yr old could do it !!

The cheapest fun day out is to sit in the shade and watch the hopefuls do their official driving test around the circuit behind the DLT. Many bring the biggest family pickup they can find, which of course is totally unmanageable for most novices. Navigating between cones, reverse parking etc is a complete lost cause for most.

At the top of the steep up ramp on the first hump bridge is a stop sign. 50% of the hopefuls roar up the ramp and sail straight through the stop sign. Cop blows his whistle furiously. Test is over. Come back again tomorrow.

Samui often has their own rules and regulations, and cannot be compared with Buriram – and many other provinces in Thailand – however they do accept a Yellow House Book (they did with mine about a month ago) as proof of address...

Thank you for all for the info posted here,

Please can someone clarify if this is the correct requirement for a first licence for both car and bike:
Passport
2 Copies of Passport bio page & current extension page
2 x ‘Residence Letter’
2 x Passport photo
2 x Medical Certificate

I have a UK driving licence and International Driving Permit, I presume showing them will help? Do they need copies of those as well?

Appreciate any advice.

Licence photos are digetal & taken while there.

You need photos for residence letter.

Residence letter is done at Samui Immigration,  first!  I am pretty sure correct on that .....

Yes Photo on license is done before you leave DVLA  oops ... DLT....  all very efficient on that part... well assuming passing all the hops and hurdles!
