I think the more useful question would be "How can we get in on some of that?"

My question would be, why would anyone pay someone who is walking around with a camera.

I watch a few of the vloggers, but pay someone to tell me what food in a restaurant tastes like , I 'd rather go to the restaurant and try it myself.

You don't pay 'em.  Google pays 'em for bringing in clicks and advertising $$$.  Just like TVF.

If you aren't paying for it, you are the product.

There are many ways folks can pay ,some have a load of options, my puzzle is why they move poor Thais on for begging but allow Ferangs to film here and receive cash filming only Thai Assets, and the odd border run

my vlog went walkabout

How do they get Youtube to come around and film for them?

I'm sure they don't "allow" it.  But a YouTube millionaire with a camera looks so much like a tourist or retiree with a camera that they have a hard time catching them.

Beggars can't ply their trade without being pretty obvious.

And regardless of how I feel about the relative value that a beggar and a blogger create, someone smarter than me pays the bloggers.  Not so much the beggars.

Maybe some day, the fuzz will get on YouTube and start tracking them down.  Or some local will get into an online pissing contest with one and rat him/her out.  I hope not.  They're not harming me in the least, so live and let live as far as I'm concerned.

What's really got a lot of TVF'ers panties in a bunch is that fact that digital nomads can make great money pretty much anywhere in the world doing something they really enjoy.  It ain't like pushing a broom and mucking toilets for peanuts like I did before I got over-educated.  Even now, overpaid as I am, I wish I could make half the money by laying on a beach and having other people click to see it.  I'm envious, too.  But there's no animosity.  That puts a knot in my stomach, and they don't even know I'm stewing over their success.

Seems funny to me they soon oust a young teacher for not having enough to survive , yet allow the scammers to film here and stay with money clearly made by filming National Assets

You mean "Promoting Thai Tourism"?  Think about it, TAT doesn't even have to pay for the publicity.

You are not obliged to watch. Better yet, you invest the money and create your own entertainment website. You can then set content standards etc. You sound like the  babies who  complain  about Felix aka Pewdiepie having changed his channel content. If you are unhappy, go stare at  Fred's channel before he grew up, made money on Nickelodeon, went gay and maked old folks blush.  Go out and populate the channels with the content you deem appropriate.

Too much for me,I only watch easy stuff, from regular folks ,but you seem to like scammers,or trying to make no money begging folk seem silly.

Hahahaha wow. Where to start.

1. It's a gray area whether they need a work permit, because it's online work in a foreign currency, has no physical presence in the Thai economy, takes no jobs from Thais, and at any rate it's impossible to get a work permit for something like that. But let's not start that again, many threads discuss that.

2. Most of the videos bring tons of positive exposure and tourism to Thailand and boosts the economy, I'd imagine Thailand is quite chuffed about all these young people making videos. In Chiang Mai there are a lot of vegan cyclist youtubers who are very highly praised, they've met with Thai police several times (there was an incident with a video about cycling up Doi Suthep) and nothing happened. They've single handedly allowed some Thais to open vegan restaurants. Basically a boost to the Thai economy all round. Even if it's a boring video about a border run it's still free advertising for Thailand.

3. You don't have to donate via Patreon if you don't have to. It's not comparable to begging because it's not in your face and annoying like a beggar is. It's called supporting the content creators you like, major newspapers, political podcasts etc. all have ways to pay. In return you get less ads, access to hidden content, etc. You get something back, unlike with a beggar. If the videos you're watching aren't really doing anything with the donations they get, in terms of giving back to the audience with upgraded content / a higher volume of material, then chances are they aren't getting many donations anyway.

4. Let's be honest if it was a Thai doing this in your country you wouldn't care as much, you'd think who cares what they do in the privacy of their home, if they want to film the place and make a bit of ad revenue on Youtube good luck to them. Deep down you're annoyed because you want to feel special and unique by living in Thailand, and you probably moved here quite late in life, all these young newbies coming over early getting a head start and having the time of their lives irritates you, and creates competition for the local ladies.

@ 30b per 1000 views seems to me it will be a hard slog to earn any decent coin from it.

Real pro's have equipment that goes completely unnoticed even to people standing in front of them, sitting next to them.

(I will not link an example that I know as it will be deemed inappropriate for TV)

Only stupidos walk with a video-cam holding in front of them and wonder why so many people hide their faces/shy away.

(and this stupido managed to catch "Pattaya" as channel name, hope he is not on TV)

well, most of them are here on inappropriate visas.  As to how much they make?  The numbers I have heard of from online blogs, adsense revenues, etc. are not that much and the people barely scrape by, cutting all the corners, no medical or travel insurance, etc.

Hi Ace.

I view a lot of www.youtube videos on a myriad of topics.    How are  you differentiating between hobby and spammers?

Just watch a few like John Phillips land of Oz, U First , Enjoy Life ,they have rather different perspectives on Tubers

A few people have started to go private and will only upload private videos to Patreon members.

Take Sunny in Thailand for example, he was always saying "don't leave me guys, I do this for you" then last week he dumped all his 50,000 subscribers and went private.

John Phillips and others may have played a part in that though, everyone thinks he's a scammer, his live rant seemed to get a lot of attention from other vloggers.

Thanks for the reply ACE but I'm not clear on what you mean.       From the poster below you I understand  now some  tube posters apparently seek funding from paypal and such to view content.   Is that what you're referring to?

I've seen Sunny in Thailand videos and would think he'd be content with the revenue he gets from the AdSense.     I guess that's not enough.

Adsense revenue is peanuts, about $1 per thousand views for Youtubers.

Sunny in Thailand has 30k views in the last 30 days. He's making barely 1000 baht a month if he doesn't charge for private content.

If people put aside jealousy for a moment and thought about it, it's a good thing that the internet has given people the ability to independently make money doing something they love from home, or while travelling.

Or do well have to get 'proper jobs' down the sawmill.

Not according to the labour dept it isnt. The only people who constantly say its a grey area are the ones avoiding income taxes, not getting legal, and desiring to just float on through.

if you turn on YouTube ads while living in Thailand, or post them in your own blog where they can collect revenue, this could be considered work. Even if you posted videos while outside Thailand, but then activated or turned on ads related to them, this would still be considered work, as you would be making money while in the country. It means you are working while you are living in the Kingdom. However, if you activated the ads before entering the country, but still received revenue once entering the country for your holiday, then this would not be considered as working while staying in Thailand.

Yeah I've seen that before posted by you in other threads that I posted in.

It's one soundbite from one guy in Phuket (known to be a bit stricter) but there's still no actual official policy in writing, and so far it's unheard of for digital nomads to be arrested.  And it's not possible to get a work permit and 'get legal' / pay taxes doing what they do anyway.
