The English Football League (EFL) has agreed a three year deal with Carabao to sponsor the EFL Cup.

The sponsorship deal with the Thai energy drinks brand, which is worth in the region of £18m, will begin at the start for 2017/2018 season and will run until the end of the 2020 season.

The deal will see the competition become known as the ‘Carabao Cup’ and will provide the football league with a new platform in which to target new and lucrative audiences in Thailand and throughout Southeast Asia.

The EFL Cup has been without a sponsor since an agreement with credit card firm Capital One ended at the end of last season. Former sponsors of the competition include Rumbelows, Coca Cola and Carling.

A statement by the English Football League said: “The growing global appeal of the EFL Cup was pivotal to securing the sponsorship and it is anticipated that the Carabao relationship will provide the EFL with a platform to reach new audiences in the ASEAN region and support additional growth of the competition.

“The new deal is also set to benefit the game at all levels with significant funds being invested into community and grass roots football via the EFL Trust.”

Shaun Harvey, EFL chief executive added: "As a well-established brand in football, Carabao is a perfect fit for the EFL and I have no doubt that throughout its duration, this partnership will prove mutually beneficial as we collectively look to boost our profile and exposure in local and international markets."

Pairoj Piempongsant, chairman of Intercarabao, said: “The EFL Cup embodies the very essence of British football consciousness. All 92 clubs in the country competing in the first major cup competition of the season, culminating in the final at Wembley.

“The EFL Carabao partnership represents a unique platform to expand the Carabao brand nationally and globally; and thus leveraging the universal “fighting spirit” of football with a truly powerful global platform that will bring new awareness to the EFL internationally, while also establishing Carabao as a major player in the global energy drinks market.”

The Carabao brand currently sponsor Championship club Reading.

Ironic that caffeine-packed sugar-laden drinks are legal, yet hemp is illegal.  How many violent crimes in Thailand are committed by people who are chemically influenced by those types of drinks?   How many from alcohol?  How many from a combination?   My guess is 75 to 85%.

In contrast, how many crimes  have been committed by a person stoned on hemp, in Thailand or worldwide?

Answer: ZERO.  Hemp can't get a person stoned.

In some ways, Thailand is like Bizarroland (a fictitious planet depicted in early Superman comics)  - a place where up is down, black is white, good is bad, etc.

The band sold their shares in the company a few years ago.
