Yingluck’s 10 tonnes of rice sold out in one hour

BANGKOK: -- A lot of people showed up at the parking lot of Fashion Island shopping mall in Bangkok on Saturday to buy Hom Mali rice put on sale at 20 baht/kg by former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her former Pheu Thai MPs.

Ten tonnes of rice which the Pheu Tha members claimed to have bought from farmers in Ubon Ratchathani and Surin provinces on Thursday were sold out in just one hour.

As soon as Ms Yingluck arrived at the parking lot, many people who had been waiting there clapped their hands and cheered. Several asked to be photographed with her.

Ms Yingluck told the media that she bought the rice from the farmers in order to help ease their hardship “as a private citizen” without any hidden agenda.

“Let time to prove my sincerity,” she said as she pleaded with her opponents not to suspect her motive or to accuse her.

I know a general who will be angry, very angry indeed!

She went on saying that the incumbent government’s scheme to extend credit to farmers to delay their sale of rice was not different from her government’s rice pledging scheme – that is both were not intended to make profits but to help the rice farmers.

That defence won't stop the General from convicting her any way...

Unlike her government, Prayuth has already passed his amnesty bill, ... :coffee1:

Except perhaps that she was/is paying B20,000 for a ton of Hom Mali, while the latest increased-price offered by the current government is B13,000 per ton, a minor technical point ?

I can see next time she organises a rice sale Prayuth will send in the troops to stop her.

Just wait till be gets his new tanks from Russia. And that will be after he can find the money to pay for them.

Thai's helping Thai's. I do not know what she bought it for or what she sold it for. But I do know some farmers were able to sell 10 tonnes of rice. To me that is what the whole thing is about, the farmers selling their rice for enough so they can survive.

According to the OP above  ...  " to buy Hom Mali rice put on sale at 20 baht/kg ".

I haven't seen the price she purchased it at directly reported, but this thread perhaps implies that it was B20/kg, you decide   ...

"She talked with the farmers and asked them about the price of paddy. They said they decided to mill the paddy themselves rather than selling the grains to the millers who often took advantage on them by suppressing the price claiming the grains have high humidity.

Upset by the millers gave them at most seven baht per kilogramme of paddy depending on the humidity of the grains, they said they decided to group together to mill their crops and sell them in the market directly to the consumers of up to 20 baht per kg of milled rice which has earned an extra 5 baht profit per kg.

Ms Yingluck then bought a small amount of rice from the farmers and them to members of her entourage 5 kgs each."

However I would note that that link says she "bought a small amount of rice from the farmers", whereas she is reported to have sold 10 tons down in Bangkok, so one should not assume that the same rice was involved ?

At the end of the day she has done a good turn for the farmers. Why would you complain about it. Now if it were anyone else, the accolades would be pouring in.

Still in the rice business.  Keep a good thing going.  Do we expect to see Yinluck set up a rice stall in the local outdoor vegie market?

If she does then the competition will stiiffen up and the General will have to open a stall at the local market himself to show he is doing his bit.

He can then invite that media he loves so much to come and witness and film him being surrounded by cheering and clapping adoring fans.

Much of the hype is because Yingluck is there in person and the adoring crowds ( 80% women) love a chance to see her. She's still very popular with a huge group of people and the more the government tries to harass her, the more popular she will become. She certainly knows how to keep her face in the news. Good luck to her, she's going to need it and she's trying to appear to be helping the rice farmers.

I bought 50 kg from Fashion Island and gave to my local school. Help with school lunch program.

Was Yingluck present?  Would you have done the same thing had you bought 50kg from Makro?

I was at the mall shopping for Black Shirts. I saw they were selling rice and my daughter said we should buy.

I dropped it off at her school today.

What is wrong ? And what is wrong with you ?

Of course she did it to make Prayut looks bad and silly and she succeeded.

Relax, don't get mad, nothing wrong, just asking, but you didn't answer.

Yes I knew from her.

Where I live all the homes cost over 10 million baht. This is a heavy support area of Red Shirts. They have helped to make the area very HiSo ( rich ). The best roads, great schools and Fashion Island ( where we shop)  is like Siam Paragon.

She is well liked in this area; and not unusual to see her at the mall. She helps many people; and has done so before she got involved in Politics. Regarding the rice for the school. 50 % of the parents give healthy food; sports equipment, international books for the vast library; etc etc. Normally I give 5,000 baht of New Zealand milk to the school every month. This time I added some rice.

Accolades on TV? Even if she gave it away the moaning would go 20 pages

In the scheme of things, based on the tonnage of the annual rice crops, how much a difference has she really made? She spent 200k baht on rice and got a huge amount of publicity. Well worth the cost.

Anyone not thinking this a PR exercise is somewhat naive.

Really. I live in that area too. And I am a regular visitor to both Fashion Island (there yesterday) and Promenade.

Any "celebrity" of any kind who turns up is "well liked" when there's the chance of some selfies.

I've never seen her at the mall. I don't go every day but do go regularly. Never heard of any instances of her helping people before entering politics. maybe because she was relatively unknown before being announced as No.1 party list candidate. She was seen as a bright, new face, young and possibly untainted by old stigmas. But that opinion has changed in many of the people I know. Most every one around here was laughing yesterday and Saturday - thought it a clever gimmick, but saw it just as a PR stunt, which it was.

Of course it is a PR exercise, but a PR exercise which is working, by the looks of things.
