PM thanks everyone for helping rice farmers

BANGKOK, 7 November 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha expressed his gratitude to everyone in the public and private sectors for their support for rice farmers.

According to Spokesperson to the Prime Minister’s Office Lt. Gen Sunsern Kaewkumnerd, the premier said most Thais were aware of the rice price slump, given the fact that members of the general public have been giving support to the rice farmers.

Gen. Prayut said their efforts showed that they never wanted the problem to be handled by anyone alone. It also showed how they remember the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s commitment to the Thai people.

In addition, the Prime Minister’s gratitude was extended to the Thai Rice Mill Association, middlemen and silo owners for not dumping down the buying prices. To promote price sustainability, the rice farmers have been encouraged to modernize their farming methods and adopt a large scale farming approach where multiple farmers grow rice in the same field to reduce production costs.

They have also been advised to sell their grains via community-based silos and rice cooperatives and raise livestock in addition to rice growing to supplement their incomes.

Gen. Prayut is scheduled to meet members of the National Rice Policy Committee today (Monday) to discuss urgent matters related to in-season rice grains for the production year of 2016-2017.

Good to see that the junta MP has finally come around and understand that helping the farmers reflects the highest order commitment to the people. So he erred in politicizing previous rice schemes. The Supreme Court and the Administrative Court trials of the malfeasance case and executive order respectively should be taking all this into consideration in their judgement.

Just your biased opinion aligned to your personal agenda and nothing more.

Overall your summation not all that accurate and misleading, as usual

I think the junta PM agrees with me. He is pulling out all the stops to subsidies the next round of harvested rice. Could be the mother of all subsidies when this done and dusted. Then the courts will have no choice but rule against the charges. Not bias but sensible common sense opinion. Too bad you lean so much to the right that you can't see that.

Unfortunately your "common sense" doesn't differentiate between a real government subsidy, one that keeps real accounts, and one touted as "self financing", with apparently no accounts, no management or supervision, with a self appointed chair who never attended any meetings and that refused to allow parliamentary scrutiny and ignored all warnings. A scheme set up to allow many in the change to abuse it and profiteer and all in the hope market prices could be manipulated to cover it all up.

Yingluck is charged with negligence - and the courts will rule on that charge. And so far, she and her legal team have not made one single comment to refute that particular charge. Please do tell us how appointing yourself chair, never attending any meetings, refusing to pay attention to warnings from organizations such as the World Bank and Bloomsberg or internal finance people (who faced intimidation and punishment for daring to comment) isn't negligent. Your "common sense" opinion on good management practice and negligence must outstanding. Can't wait.

I think your stretching it a bit saying this with both words sensible and common sense.

Self delusion - leads to such excesses!

As my old grandmother used to say never hate someone if someone is nasty to you you just "Kill them with kindness" I have found this to work every time God rest her soul.

But then there's "If you can't say something good about someone, sit right here by me", attributed to the daughter of President Teddy Roosevelt

Here is a bit of news about the Vietnamese rice industry. Notable bits include:

1. They have a plan to improve the quality of their rice.

2. They use the International Rice Research to help them (IRRI). I haven't read anywhere where Thailand has called on the IRRI to help. I suspect the reason being that the Thais feel don't the need for help from the outside.

3. Vietnam has a vision for the future of their rice industry.

4. Vietnam is trying to reduce the usage of water, labour, pesticides and seed.

5. The IRRI is working with farmers and co-ops to improve marketing, their brand image and increase profitability.

I could go on and there is more. But readers can see for themselves in this story what is going on in the opposition rice camp.

All I ever seem to read about in Thailand is the experts like the military, politicians of all persuasions and egghead academics offering advice as to what everyone else should be doing. The result of which seems total disorganisation without any plan resulting in fear and panic and I expect hidden away behind the scenes there is an element of media induced hysteria.

Just another typical BB's opinion piece devoid of truth and facts. Worse he pretend that he knows the privy information and even the registra of meeting attendance. Not BB best moment and effort to explain.

Does Prayuth's thanks extend to PTT gas stations nationwide that apparently gave up forecourt space to local rice farmers so that they could sell rice directly to passing customers? I am pretty sure the traditional gravy train of the "Thai Rice Mill Association, middlemen and silo owners" have a totally different point of view.

The PM is a liar and non reformers.  The best thing is his exit.
