Teerapat Chuesin covers his face as he is brought to Prachachuen Police Station on Tuesday in Bangkok.

BANGKOK — Police on Tuesday arrested the last of the group of students who shot a fellow student to death for not participating in their initiation rituals.

Teerapat Chuesin, 20, was the fourth suspect to be arrested, after police detained his three classmates for the killing of Nattapong Satachon, 24, on Oct. 28. The suspects and the victim were enrolled at Rajamangala University of Technology Phra Nakhon in Bangkok.

When is our illustrious leader going to ban all forms of hazing? And yes, it does go on in the army.

Banning hazing wherever it happens is easy.

Stopping it however, is not so easy.

Read the article.

"Somebody who declines to participate in the [very often violent and dangerous and always humiliating] initiation rituals"

Not really. He proved he was the better man. Couldn't have that.

Is being murdered for not taking part common as well?

No, but about once a year or so a college student dies from something stupid, like alcohol poisoning or falling off a bridge. Silly rituals.

I'm no fan of hazing, they are nothing but violence and intimidation.

However, neither am I a fan of those who try to deflect a story by saying ''this happens elsewhere as well'.

Good point!

It should be noted that at technical colleges, now universities, there is much more incidence of violence, pain and danger in the rap nong activities than at 'regular' universities due to the culture of these institutions. This leads to higher incidence of death and serious injury.

Please explain the difference in culture?

"Regular" or academic universities are usually over 50% female and with a medium to high percentage of middle class students studying academic subjects. If a govt. university, they will have had to pass a tough academic entrance exam. They have no culture of fighting with, brawling with or shooting "rival" students from other universities.

Technology colleges or universities are usually less than 10% female with a low percentage of students from cossetted middle class backgrounds. All students are studying technical subjects many of which are dirty, manual and offer the opportunity to fabricate weapons such as home-made guns. The students are generally not academic. There is a prevalent culture of fighting with nearby technical colleges which has resulted in many deaths over the years.

That is just the blackest, most callous and accurate assessment.
