At least 13 workers die in garment factory fire in India

NEW DELHI (AP) — A fire that broke out in a garment factory basement trapped and killed at least 13 workers as they slept early Friday in the building just outside New Delhi, a government official said.

Another nine workers were injured, four of them seriously, Uttar Pradesh state official Naresh Mathur said.

The factory was in a converted house in the industrial town of Sahibabad, and had a narrow stairway into the basement where the workers slept.

A dozen fire engines doused the flames after battling them for several hours. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Factory fires are common in India where safety enforcement is lax.

For which brands these people worked and die for? Good journalism would have investigated this!

Lets not give out to much information bad for business. It brings back yesterday when on the news Modi the PM of India was in Japan drumming up business. He told Abe that India was open for business with cheap labor. Yes right on TV the PM claims in essence that he has lots of slave labor available and he cares little about the fresh looking at the air quality in New Delhi. Kind of reminiscent of the Nazi gas chambers.

This is the same country that is still financially aided by the U.K. taxpayer, is being courted by the U.K. government - thankfully minus maharajah Cameron - for trade, and has businesses in the U.K. that are determined to wring everything they can out of the taxpayer and employees (think TATA).

We could start by ending the aid and the subsidies NOW!

As far as I understand, it is not connected to any international brands. There's quite a few stories on various Indian news outlets. The thing is that these kind of accidents are common (if not as deadly as this one). Googling for pics  would give a better idea about the sort of set up in question.
