Cabinet OKs more flights to Russia

BANGKOK: -- The cabinet on Tuesday approved the Transport Ministry’s plan to increase the flights between Thailand and Russia in accordance with the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries on July 23, 2014, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisit said on Tuesday.

Under the plan, the flights between Bangkok and Moscow will be increased to 105 from 70 per week, flights between Russia-Phuket and Bangkok-St Petersburg from 28 to 56 per week.

The flight increase will hopefully encourage more Russian tourists to return to Thailand.

Thailand was the favourite destination for Russian tourists several years ago. But since the devaluation of the Russian ruble against the US dollar a few years back, Russian arrivals have substantially dropped and now replaced by Chinese tourists.

For the flights to Russia, four stopover points have been designated, including Chengdu, Changchun, Shenyang and Harbin.

I wonder if those numbers are correct? To me it seems a huge amount of flights from Moscow. Traditionally i was under the impression that the majority of Russian tourists in Thailand came from the Siberian cities rather than the western ones.

The East is throwing the Merkins away. You can see a very slow but steady wave moving eastwards.

Then again, you will see more Russians fighting with locals and dying from moped accidents here in Phuket. :passifier:

Lets hope not :1zgarz5:

So the increase is based on a speculative hope, not supported by any study demonstrating any actual demand for more flights or that such flights would be profitably competitive with other airlines. Kind of a "build it and they will come" mentality.

Recently Thai Airways International has admitted that it may be unable to achieve this year’s revenue target of Bt180 billion due to tough global competition. Then there is the volatility of a shaking Russian economy that will likely show an overall GDP contraction for 2016. Certainly there must be better nations for increased/new flights with less economic risk? Thai Airways just added direct to US flights - ait to see if that proves successful before venturing into more risky destinations.

161 flights a week from Russia? That's 23 a day!

Optimism on overdrive I suspect....

How many empty seats per flight  :whistling:

I think the 4 stop overs are to get the seats filled with Chinese in case there is a lack of Russian interest.

The transit cities suggest this is a concession to the Chinese airlines. Aeroflot Bangkok-Moscow is often full but not Thai ( the latter too expensive).

I've understood Russians switched to Vietnam. As they say in my country, too late to fart when you've shat your pants.

most of them on the return leg... but let us increase the number of overstaying Thai ladies working in Russian cities.

Be careful what you wish for.

Years ago when the American left Vietnam and the Russians moved in, the locals called them Americans without Dollars.

Best way to promote these flights is directly over the Ukraine.

A lot has happened since July 2014, like the small fact that the Russian economy is absolutely crippled and its inhabitants are forming bread queues, again.  You couldn't make this shit up.
