BANGKOK: -- Police have arrested the head of major crime racket accused of selling phones stolen in India to unsuspecting customers at MBK Shopping Centre in Bangkok.

According to cops, Noorulla Ehesanulla Khan, 25, ran a gang of thieves who would steal phones from passengers travelling on Mumbai’s vast train network.

Police said that Khan would then bring the handsets to MBK where they would be sold as second hand smartphones.

“During his interrogation, he (Khan) told us that he would take trips to Bangkok where he would sell it at MBK Centre, a large 8-storey shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand. He told us that it is the biggest market for second hand mobile phones in the world and hence they get a good price for the stolen phones,” said an officer from the Crime Branch told The Indian Express.

As well as stealing phones himself, Khan also had links to other gangs who were involved in the racket, with each gang member giving him up to 40% of any sale in order to be in on the scam.

Officers from the Mumbai Police Crime Branch believe Khan had been running the operation for about five years.

Khan told police he made several trips over the last few months.

Once the handsets had been sold he would use the funds to buy other electronic goods in Thailand which he would then sell in India for profit.

“He would then bring back the equipment here and sell them at high prices,” said the officer.

Acting on a tip off, police were finally able to arrest Khan and in doing so found him in possession of 25 smartphones which they say he was due to take to MBK.

No information as to whether Thai police are aware of the case or were investigating links to Khan’s gang from Thailand was filed in the report.

Allegedly at one time it wasn't unusual for a Japanese visitor to check the frame number of the big bikes here, someone said it was because they had had it stolen in Japan and figured they made their way here as boxes of parts. They would then be assembled and sold on to unsuspecting buyers.

I just saw a nice movie from a young moviemaking student at the academy. He had made a hacked iphone which he could control by internet, he let it being stolen and followed the thieve many weeks. He could listen to all said in the room, turn on the camera, read the emails, track the gps and so on. The thieve didn't notice anything and was filmed nonstop by his own phone. The guy also upgraded his data-payments so he wouldn't notice it.

So at the mbk they don't only sell copycopy brandnames but also stolen goods now...well what a relieve. Next they sell drugs or sex? Fake drugs are sold on every street, especially the blue pills which you guys won't need of course.

Why don't they investigate all the Thai merchants in MBK who are selling pirated phones as new Samsungs and iPhones?

I think you mean why don't they simply arrest all of the merchants on Floor 4 of MBK. They're all thieves.

That's a reasonable comment.  Well, as reasonable (not to say as accurate) as saying that the entire Thaivisa membership are thieves, I suppose.

It was a partially tongue-in-cheek comment, but mostly serious, and specifically geared toward electronics techs on floor 4. I just asked my Thai girlfriend what she thinks, and she completely agrees with me. I think one would be very hard-pressed to find a phone shop in MBK that doesn't participate in black-market trades and shadow part-harvesting—it's part of the 'system' in place on Floor 4 of MBK. It's just how business is done there. Of course, there may be SOME phone techs at MBK who actually care about their customer more than a quick buck, but they must be very hard to find.

Well, if your girlfriend completely agrees with you then it must be true and speculation without evidence is always the way to go when deciding who are thieves.
