Pstbkk2 Posted November 24, 2016 Posted November 24, 2016 Hi! I'll be driving to Mae Sot and thinking to go to see Thi Lo Su waterfall from there. I found enough of general information and photos but need to know how is the situation there now. I read that it is possible to drive there only between Nov and Apr. I'm thinking if I should drive my 4X4 pick up (I can drive well so difficult or long way is not an obstacle) or fly to Mae Sot and then book a tour or any transport to the waterfall. Things I need to know is an advice from someone who has been there: 1. Drive or take a tour? What could be better and why? Any info about prices? With your seems to be easier but with car I can take a lot of stuff, be more independent. 2. Any common scam in that region? How much is the price for national park there? 3 What about any place to stay overnight there, it seems like it is not one day trip from Mae Sot. I will be very grateful for answers and I promise to write a good report later with photos and videos :)
Alan Deer Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 I was told by a Thai off-roading acquaintance that you can no longer drive up to the waterfall campsite....whilst I'm not convinced this is true, it is a long way to go to find out. Last time I was there was 2 years ago - I would certainly advise against using a sedan - you'll need a pick up at least and better still 4x4. Park entry was 200/400 baht - the usual for foreigners if you have to rely on the 4x4 Song Teaws to get up there, I'm sure they will be asking an inflated price as they would have an effective monopoly. Camped at the waterfall last time and spent a time in Umphang both before and after......plenty of places to stay in Umphang. - it still about 45 km for the waterfall itself. Just seen the date on your post...where's the rip report? Were you able to drive to the campsite?
BMW Overlander Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 Yes you can drive up with proper 4WD SUV or Pickup truck, no problem. I did. Some folks have been suggesting of transportation monopoly to TLS waterfall, no such thing. Stories like these usually come from people who never been there at first place. Since no report from Pstbkk2, here is the video from my most recent visit, February 2017. 2 years ago we visited nearby Karen village of Ban Kota during Songkhran. Came back this February again to pass them the photos taken back in 2015.
Spaniel Posted April 12, 2017 Posted April 12, 2017 Way back in Dec 2012 my wife and I visited Thi Lo Su waterfall. We spent the night in Mae Sot then the next day drove to Um Phang and stayed at the Phudoi Resort. We were planning to drive from Um Phang to the waterfall but were advised not to. I was driving a Honda CRV. So we booked a tour from the hotel which included rafting down the river, then they meet you with a pickup after about a hour of rafting and take you the rest of the way to the waterfall. After about 1 - 2 hours at the waterfall it's back in the truck and return to Um Phang. It's a all day trip and we paid B2000 for both of us. So to answers your questions 1. Drive to Um Phang then from there take a tour to the waterfall. 2. No scams that we saw and I don't recall what the entrance fee to the park was. 3. We stayed at the Phudoi Resort in Um Phang , B500 a night and they arranged the tour to the waterfall the next day. We paid B 2000 for the tour. Tel: 081 8677563
