I wouldn't call that a boom.  How often do you go?

How exactly was Castro responsible for this great achievement?

It doesn't really matter what you would call, many people are calling it a boom, as it is booming.

I don't go, but then I come from a country with an adequate and free health service, I am sure it will be popular with Americans, as obviously they suffer greatly in that respect.

Not sure why you ask how Castro was responsible, I was just countering the nonsense comment scoffing at Cuba's health and education.

Wikipedia has an article on Cuban Medical Internationalism. Cuba traded medical services with Venezuela for oil. Chavez went to Venezuela for cancer treatment.

Cuba has a long and good reputation for health care.

Well, Chavez is dead, so probably not the best choice for touting their medical care.

Again not an argument is it? - that particular post was about US phobia you seem to have missed the point?

No,  you seem to have missed the point that the thread is about Castro's death, not US phobias.

many latinos claims chavez was actually killed because he was becoming to dominant over Fidel.

Nicholas Maduro was a better runner-up more easy to manipulate.

however nobody anticipated the drop in oil-price so it didn't work out anyway.

cuba always lived on someones else money

russia,  colombian drug dealers, FARC guerrilla etc etc

also Fidel liked to sell his people to wars and medicare to random countries to the highest bidder.

all the gains into his own pocket of course.

"It doesn't really matter what you would call, many people are calling it a boom"

And then there are those who read the facts:

http://www.tradingeconomics.com/cuba/gdp-growth-annual

(Be sure and scroll down to see where Cuba stands on the list...)

Not exactly languishing, and better than it's been in several years, but hardly "booming" (LOL).

Funny, I couldn't find anything about health tourism on there, booming or not!  Or did you just jump in there without the first idea of what we were talking about?  LOL

One of the extraordinary men of modern times.

While some ( probably many ) will dislike his politics, he liberated his land from dictatorship, American imperialism and the mafia. His biggest mistake was no doubt permitting Russian missiles to be installed, which IMO allowed the US to impose a severe embargo for many years. Were it not for that, I reckon his regime would have not been so extreme, and relations with the US could have been normalized many years ago.

Within Cuba, he is no doubt remembered with fondness and respect, which, IMO, is the only thing that counts.

no doubt you got your knowledge of Cuban history from the Godfather movies . cuba is the pit's . everyone has free medical , but sadly no services are supplied if you are not important .they have free education that all the countries of the world will not accept their degree's . ten's of thousands of political opposition people have vanished into the prisons never to be heard from again . the diet in cuba is a bowel of beans  ( your choice red or black ) that a dead chicken was waved over it for a couple seconds to trick the mind it was chicken flavor . long gone is the vibrant cuban culinary culture . these people created the best dishes of the Americas hands down . their only industry is cigars . that they do well . the embargo did nothing to cuba , they were still free to trade with the world but chose to have sugar as there only export . face it , these two brothers killed any self help  motivation of the cuban people long ago . they were the bastard child of the old soviet union  ,    and daddy ran away from them ......

That's one thing most miss.  Cuba's been open to trade with the entire world, except the US.  And it's in a terrible state.  The food is horrible.  I once bought some beef for my friend and his family.  First thing he said was "proteina!".  I would have never thought about that when eating beef!  But it's something they rarely get.

Yes, Castro did wonderful things for his people.  Once the USSR crashed, so did Cuba.

There are also reports that Cuban doctors mis-diagnosed the type of cancer but since it is apparently a Venezuelan state secret, nobody knows for sure. In any case, he could hardly have gone to the Mayo Clinic.

Mayo Clinic, LOL, it's only number one in America where the standards are not exactly hard to beat.

Mayo Clinic is a fantastic hospital.  Getting health care in the US may be a problem, but the quality of the doctors is first rate.  One reason that when you go into a hospital there, doctors are from all over the world.  Great place to work and make money.  Unlike Cuba....

Look at the number of US hospitals in this list:

http://www.ontoplists.com/2015/04/top-10-hospitals-in-world.html

Or this list:

And you automatically trust the opinion of ontoplists.com????  Who the hell are they to decide which are the best hospitals in the world, and how did they actually decide, they don't say beyond "after complete survey".

Cuba is a very bad place to make money however how they are unlike the US is that they have 5.91 doctors per 1000 people whereas the US has just 2.3.

Then show me a list that says US hospitals are not good.  OK?  Doesn't matter how many doctors per 1000 people a country has if they don't have the equipment and the skills.

I've know quite a few doctors in over the years.  Some of the sharpest people I've ever met.  Not every one, but for sure the specialists.

Accomplishments, ? how about creating one of the best free Health care and Education systems just 228 miles from the country with the most expensive health care in the world...

You spoil your case by exaggeration.Cuba certainly had a good health care system by third world standards (ie adhering to some important basic standards), but there were some terrible failures as well.It was not a first class system as the fellow travellers suggest.Party members bypassed the standard health system and were treated in special clinics for the elite. The picture is much less clear on education particularly as Cuba always had high standards of literacy (ie under Batista and before).

Generally the pass by the Left given to Castro makes me retch. He murdered many in the early years and had a disgusting human rights record throughout.I suppose anti Americanism explains much of the stupidity and dishonesty on this subject. He tried to persuade Russia to use nuclear weapons on the US but Kruschev effectively told him to bog off.

Good riddance to the old goat.

When a friend of mine was unable to be operated on as scheduled, because there was no anesthesiologist available, "they are all in Venezuela" was a complaint I regularly heard.

Oliver Stone !! Do you understand the implications ?

Personally I find it hard to overlook the murders, the torture, the human rights abuse, the repression of freedom, the slavish adherence to Stalinism. It's cowardly and dishonest to excuse Castro's crimes on the grounds Batista was worse.

But perhaps you maintain none of the above crimes took place.

The UK delegation to the old brute's funeral will be led by Jeremy Corbin with Gerry Adams and Ken Livingston in attendance. What a stench.

I spent a month in Cuba also.  Traveled around mainly with my Cuban friend.  You did watch that video, right?  And only want to believe what Moore said?  Guaranteed the Cuban government took him to the best facilities available.  What country wouldn't do this?  Kinda like what North Korea would do.

You don't get off that easily.I have already commented that Cuba has a good third world health system - even if the Cuban elite has its own private system

But you ignore Castro's crimes. You remind me of the fellow travellers (Some stupid, some plain sinister) who burbled on about the Bolshoi ballet, the superb chess capability, the pretty corn fields at exactly the same time Stalin's thugs were murdering and torturing.

I don't have a list of worlds best hospitals, I am not sure how you would compile it.  Anyway, I know you have some of the best, for those who can afford it, a similar case to your universities where on average they are not particularly good but then a few are the best in the world.

As for lack of equipment and skills, the former is no doubt true but if the latter were then we would not see the result they have attained in Cuba where they have stats to rival any western country.

It's pretty clear to me that there is an American/ rest of the world divide here.

I get the impression most Americans think it great that he is dead, but many elsewhere in the world  respect him as a great liberator from oppression.

Perhaps if the US hadn't embargoed Cuba and tried to assassinate him so many times, he would have become more amenable to relaxing the regime over time.

Ive only just returned from Cuba 2 weeks in the country.....didnt look poor to me when i compare it to Cambodia or India....

People in general seemed happy, plenty of food to have as long as you didn't mind a lack of choice, most would be seasonal and certainly tasty.

Havana could be one of the best cities in the world once the $ start rushing in.

Politicly Castro was good for the country in the beginning, the revolution had run its course by the 70's, you only have to look around the world to see what is working and what is not, the Americans are broke, lot of other democratic governments on or close to there knees too....
