AIDS infection rate among 15-19 years old age group twice that of older age groups

BANGKOK: -- AIDS virus infection among Thai youths aged between 15-19 is two times higher than the infection rate of youths in the 20-24 age group, said Dr Nittaya Panupark Puengpapong, head of the infection prevention team of the AIDS Research Centre of the Thai Red Cross Society.

The infection rate is especially higher among gay men who have same-sex relationship compared to heterosexual youths, she said, adding that some of the AIDS cases which are not mother-to-child infection are as young as 12 years old.

She disclosed that the Thai Red Cross Society has cooperated with Unicef to jointly launch a pilot project for trial use of PrEP or Pre-exposure Phophylaxis medication among 2,500 teenagers in 15-19 age group in Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Bangkok and Hat Yai.

Today it is reported that Cambodia is winning the fight with AIDs.  Wonder where Cambodia will be in comparison to Thailand in 10 years time, given the rate of decline in Thailand.

I suppose that's because one tends to  stop feeling invulnerable once reaching maturity. Of course, there is a large segment of any population that never comes to that realization.

In a country where sex is tabu to talk about... but very easy to do it....it is not a surprise. Thailand is in the way to be a HIV #1 infected country in the world...if it  is not now.

They should put this in the bottled water in Pattaya.

I think you had better do some research!

HIV/AIDS is a major public health concern and cause of death in many parts of Africa. Although the continent is home to about 15.2 percent of the world's population, Sub-Saharan Africaalone accounted for an estimated 69 percent of all people living with HIV and 70 percent of all AIDS deaths in 2011.

I can see where this is heading.

Stand by for a rapid rise in STD's as the PrEP takers reckon they are immune from any infection and get at it like rabbits.

PrEP also has to be taken on a daily basis. This is way to disciplined for Thais, who will come up with some daft Thai version such as "take two before and after sex, then you'll be OK.

Not nearly enough education on safe sex.

I've been with a few girls in the past who would have simply let me not use a condom. Not because they're immoral or stupid, simply because they haven't been given the information. The mentality was "If you look clean, you are clean". Hell, I'm sure many would never equate sex to being dangerous.

Always bag it up. If she's looks a bit ropy, double bag it. That's my advice for the kids.

"If she look's a bit ropey"?

This report begs more questions than it answers - not least over the plan to turn thousands of Thai kids into guinea pigs to test what is clearly a contentious new HIV drug.

Is the scheme voluntary or compulsory? Are suitable teenagers being deliberately targetted (and if so, what are the criteria) or chosen at random?

Are parents consulted and involved in the process? If not they certainly should be.

The stated purpose of the trial is to "study the ability of youths in taking drugs on a regular basis to prevent themselves from contracting AIDS virus and to assess the safety for the use of the drug".

Does this mean the youngsters will take the prophylactic drug rather than use a condom, which is the best and cheapest way of avoiding HIV - in which case this is clearly putting them at some risk, as is using them to assess the safety in relation to kidney damage.

I was always under the impression that laboratory animals such as rats were used to assess such serious matters, not our young generation.

If the prophylactic substance  and condoms were used together, it is hard to see how the effectiveness of either could be accurately assessed.

Weird.

There is no such thing as the AIDS virus, it's the HIV virus

If the Thai "experts" can't understand the difference, then what chance do the teenage peasants have?

Hmmmmm.... I guess that, as people don't die quickly from AIDS now, if the 20-24 y.o. are less infected, it's also because they were not infected when they were in the 15-19 y.o. range. So if these figures are reliable, it suggests a change of behaviour among younger people compared to the previous groups.

I was quite impressed to see on the news yesterday that the research done in the study here a few years ago was an important stepping stone for the South Africa vaccine trial now underway

Well I am sure that makes all HIV infected people feel so much better.

And all those condomless ignorants.

"Don't worry darling I don't have the AIDS virus, just the HIV."
