Thai law needs to catch up with the cloud

BANGKOK: -- Cloud computing services have become a new requirement for the country’s digital economy in light of the “big data” era of information overload.

 

To facilitate e-commerce and e-payment services, Charoen Pokphand Group’s True and Ascend companies have, for example, turned to cloud services to store and manage the huge amount of data resulting from new digital businesses.

The Thai commerce ministry is also working closely with China’s Alibaba group to help small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) sell their products and services via Alibaba’s e-commerce and e-payment platforms, which are currently among the world’s largest.
This will be the new export channel to tap Chinese and other foreign consumers shopping online.

Depends on the "Cloud" & Data in question as a lot of countries (Egypt, Indonesia, China, Korea spring to mind) require personal customer Data to be hosted in-country so "Cloud Storage" it may be, but the Cloud in question is in-country.

UK/EU also has restrictions around DPA so whilst you can (with restrictions http://blogs.microsoft.com/on-the-issues/2015/10/06/a-message-to-our-customers-about-eu-us-safe-harbor/#sm.0000lugpb4ofhfgyusp1dbbhngz0p) use US "Safe Harbor" to leverage Cloud storage that includes hosting the US, you cannot have the data on infrastructure hosted in India (as an example).

Thx for that clarification. TBS govts will want clear paradigms re legal access, however the industry push towards cloud storage is irrepressible.

I think we will see a return of government into these legal matters - for a number of types of data, it makes perfect sense to require they be hosted on national territory.

Cloud servers in Thailand are a complete joke. They are only good for Thailand, not outside Thailand.

Here is the answer on an email because one of my contacts could not reach his server when he was vistiing Singapore.
