rooster59
New strawberry will be pick of the crop for flavour and health benefits By Mayuree Sukyingcharoenwong The Sunday Nation The strawberry research farm is run by Naresuan University in Phetchabun. A promising research project aims to deliver a new strawberry variety that not only packs a taste punch but also has enhanced health benefits. “We are in the process of boosting anthocynanin in our strawberries. The prospect is so good,” said Narongchai Pipattanawong, the marketing director of the Royal Project Foundation. Anthocyanin has antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. “We expect satisfactory results within the next two years,” he said. KhunBENQ
Would be great news if they produce strawberries with a taste. Again and again I tell the wife/family DON'T buy strawberries. They won't listen and make a sour face after tasting. 36 minutes ago, midas said: Does that cancel out the effects of pesticides and other chemicals used? They will always be an occasional treat. So I don't worry too much about this. And I better don't think about the daily diet

ezzra
Thai grown strawberries are a mere shadow of other strawberries grown in other countries, not to mention that growers are spraying buckets of pesticides and insecticides on them as strawberries are the most chemically laden fruit.... I was gobsmaked back in February on the taste, and size. The road side fruit stalls were shoulder to shoulder on highway 11 from Chiang Mai to Lampang. Mind you they were not cheep and yes I OD. Only one made it home, very good taste and texture. Bought some plants for our garden but they died, too hot i guess.(cha-am area). The new improved Thai strawberries are very good!almost like home. When we watch the farmer growing tomatoes, constantly spraying hormone, insecticide, herbicide and fertiliser...it's amazing they're even edible.....but Monsanto do love SE Asia! Agree. I grow Better Boy and Bigger Boy tomatoes using seed from the US. They do fine here. I wonder why there is not a Thai market for them. Maybe those delicious, big, fat, sweet, juicy ones referred to by khwaibah.

Tomatoes and strawberries are tasteless because they are picked green in Thailand. I hate buying overpriced unripe strawberries or tomatoes. Tomatoes are kept in bags for weeks waiting to get red and become rotten from inside.
lvr181
I hope the researchers can make that one work. My understanding, from recent research, is that black currants top the list of berries for anti-oxidants (up to 16x more than blueberries) followed by raspberries, strawberries and lastly blueberries. Unfortunately I cannot quote the research off the top of my head (but I noted it around September last year).

lungnorm
Several years ago I bought some strawberries in Bkk and was delighted at the taste and price. I still think they were up with some of the tastiest strawberries I ever tasted.
Grubster
A good strawberry is soft and flavorful but do not ship well, so most strawberries are genetically altered for looks and shipping. They look good but are white inside with little flavor. I think you could grow your own in a green house without chemicals but I don't know where you would get the seeds. Usually you buy small plants from a nursery and put them in you garden. They will survive a cold winter and regrow come spring but here I don't know how well they would do. Worked the strawberry fields as a kid and know what real strawberries should taste like (some the size of my fist). So far have only had non-flavored super sour berries here. Yuck!
