Netizens ask: Are police above the law?

BANGKOK: -- Netizens in Thailand were left asking the inevitable question on Monday when a policeman was apparently pictured using his phone while driving.

Are police above the law?

Online comment was rife after the picture emerged showed the driver of a vehicle used for transporting suspects using a phone. The vehicle had the logo of the national police on the side, reports Daily News.

Posters were asking whether there was any chance that the policeman concerned would face a fine like most members of the public caught using mobiles while driving.

According to the law drivers face a fine of between 400 and 1000 baht for the offence.

You have gotta be a front runner for the biggest apologist title, takes some doing that as there is some stiff competition on here......

Apologist for what - the police? I most certainly am not. Get your facts straight, whoever you are.

Do you think police shouldn't be allowed phones when driving?

Ooooh scary...

Yes I think exactly that playing with his mobile while driving a truck full of prisoners is dangerous and against the law not rocket science is it ?

In my opinion you appear to be an apologist for anything Thai and not just another one of the junta lickspittle club....

Why are you so cryptic?

What is scary?

I didn't know he was playing with his phone. I thought he was speaking on it, perhaps getting important orders relevant to his job. This has nothing to do with Thais. I believe all countries' police should have phones to use whenever they want.

Nothing at all cryptic in my answer you come across as a bit of an opinionated chap who likes the sound of his own voice...

'Important orders relevant to his job' that would be a new one for the buffoons in brown and there is a reason they use radios for communication

What percentage of the population do you think would believe he was involved doing important work on his mobile as even your average Thai is questioning why he is doing it?

Are you really that naive and blinkered....

Pretty sure they have radios for that purpose, that are designed to be used in a hands free manner.

Obviously they shouldn't be allowed to drive whilst using mobile phones, on account of it being both dangerous and illegal.

Netizens, oh my, I bet the authorities are quaking in their boots.

Well, maybe. Locals may seriously start questioning their lives under military law.  They may start posting on line more pictures of the infraction prone RTP.  There are NO checks and balances or elections in Thailand.  Civil Servants can do as they like.  Can a Thai policeman talk on the phone while driving ? Yes.  Can he walk and chew gum, wrangle accused monks or solve crimes ?  History says no.

What about the BIBS driving up against traffic, speeding, wearing no helmet, riding with their family with 4 on a bike with only 2  wearing helmets, helping 7 year olds leaving school onto the road driving motorbikes  ? Using BIB cars for private  business use, drunk driving, getting salaries from booze manafacturers, allowing casinos and soapy massage parlours to operate, allowing many dozens Nepalis working in major shopping malls in Phuket, forcing people to take breathalyzer tests without changing the mouthpiece, putting people's health at risk., need more...??

Excellent - you forgot - not doing their job of crime solving unless there's money in it.

Unlike you most locals don't care they are under military law, they voted the new constitution in with a yes. They really don't care that much about it all. There wont be a revolution or an armed rising of the people it just wont happen.

Certain States in Australia and the USA, also New Zealand, Police and some other emergency vehicles have an exemption in law and are allowed use of mobile phones alongside the use of radio transmitters in the vehicles.

Cannot supply operational practice for the rest of the world, but for the UK I believe it is considered that the Police would be committing a traffic violation to do so.

It is cryptic and I don't know why you haven't told me what you find scary yet.(it isn't me is it?)

It seems more like a pure flame to me.

Back to the question, of course the police are above the law, well to a certain level, of course.

Another question, do posters here ever use a phone whilst driving? I've been doing it for years(about 16) and never once been charged for it.  I'll bet all those damned netizens use their smartphones too while driving.

I'd bet that everyone here with a car and a phone has used them at the same time, apart from the guy who has never bought any pirated goods maybe.

It's illegal to drink a bottle of water while driving there and eating a sweetie. Bloody ridiculous. Thank Buddha for the freedom we get in LOS, where police don't enforce silly laws like fining  people for driving while  eating a banana.

Would agree to a certain extent, however coffee or hot pies with the filling spilling onto your knackers can be fatal, perhaps why the blanket ban:smile:

Until the Thai citizenry hold their police accountable, I will simply have no respect for them...the corruption of the police is obvious and upfront...no need to dig through papers and cell phone records...they simply practice their contempt for Thailand's laws in the open, for all to view...shut this behavior down, and maybe myself and others won't consider Thais to be stupid and lazy, with no integrity...it wouldn't be difficult to sack the entire force, and replace them with ex military and new recruits...after all, this has occured every few years anyway...one of the few times I thought everything was upfront and safe was during the initial days of the coup, when the police were "relieved" of their duties...

Never used my phone while driving (keeping it in my hand), all my recent cars have had bluetooth and if you don't have that you can get a in ear bluetooth device. There really is no excuse to drive with a phone in hand in a car. But yes I do buy pirated goods, that is a different thing from endangering people because your impaired when driving with a phone on your ear.
