NLA asks opponents to thoroughly reconsider Computer Crime Act

BANGKOK, 20 December 2016 (NNT) – The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) President is asking for opponents of the new Computer Crime Act to reconsider the contents in the law thoroughly, stressed it is only an updated version and invited all sides to exchange their views rationally.

NLA President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai has said regarding the amended Computer Crime Act BE 2559 which has been endorsed by the NLA on 16 December 2016, that this law is only a new revised version of the existing act introduced in 2007 to rearrange the power of officials and retain the court decision on cyber crime related activities. The recently endorsed act added the involvement of a filter commission, which include members from the public sector.

He has said the authority to close down websites or limit online access does not solely rest on the Minister, but also requires the court's consideration.

The NLA chief has further mentioned civil sector organizations who has voiced their concerns regarding the new law that the NLA is ready to hold a forum to exchange ideas, and is ready to answer to all questions, stressing the new law is not related to the Single Gateway concept.

He has also said regarding the petition signed by some 300,000 people opposing the new law that all opponents should study the new law thoroughly, as a revision of the 10-year-old law is needed.

Much of the concern related to the revised Computer Crime Act is on the possibility that the general public's private data may be viewed by officials, while the NLA Chief assures that the government has no intention to survey the public's private information. The new law also carries a severe punishment for officials, tripling their punishment if proved guilty.

And they have been warned not to have an opinion or criticise it or they will be arrested like the students.  You may only discuss it in a supportive and proactive way.

Now that the law has been amended with no regard to public concerns.

Thank you in advance for your time.

NLA asks opponents to thoroughly reconsider Computer Crime Act

Unlike the NLA did when "thoroughly debating" the merits of the legislation and passing by a vote of 168-0.

Welcome to upside-down world.

They may be pushing too hard on "reforms"? One, or more, of these "reforms" might eventually break the back of their hold on the people?

Does anyone remember what happened on the 22nd of May 2014 at a forum to exchange ideas?

Rationally yeah sure. The first part of the above statement is only snake oil.
