Oh how very snobbish. I would call them real down to earth people who live within there means.

Not snobbish at all. I'm from a working class background. Started full time work at 16 and have worked hard to improve my lot in life. Having been poor I know that being poor is no excuse for being filthy, unruly, drug addicted or a burden on others.  Unfortunately as with any level in society there is a mix of good and bad. But from experience you will find a of lot more trouble at the bottom. They might seem to be the salt of the earth but remember that when they steal your bike, rob your decent neighbor or rape your friends. "Lay down with dogs and you will catch fleas"

Funny how so many farangs arrive in Thsiland and suddenly feel at home with a class of people far below their level in the West. Not saying that you can't find a diamond in the rough. But generally yhe dregs of society are exactly that. Can't see many people moving from a comfy, quiet middle class area to live in a run down, crime ridden council estate.. Amazing Thailand I guess..

You must move in some dark circles. I have personaly found more trouble at the so called top. They belive money will buy anything and having money means they are untouchable.not all salt of the earth are thief's druggies or genral layabouts you know. And reading your post above re-enforces your snobbish thoughts.

Like another poster said, imho Nam Talay is the best value for money if you don't mind living in Na Jomtien.

Although I thought the condos there cost 1.5M (probably the prices dropped, last time I went there to check was almost a year ago).

Any exact location ?

Thanks.

My experience is mostly with the middle. Having worked all over the World I have found the hardworking middle class from any country seem to have the most in common.  I. like you, do my best to avoid "the top" As you say the monied elite seem to believe they are omnipotent and above the rule of law. I didn't say "All" the salt of the earth types were criminals and druggies. My family were impovershed but never broke the law and were houseproud and hardworking. But you cannot refute the stastistics that the poor working classes make up the largest part of the criminal population. I learn't at an early age to distance myself from them whenever possible. Wanting to improve oneself whether thru education, hard work or location isn't snobbish. Nor is being able to recognise bad elements and commenting on them.

Just type "Nam Talay" in  google.com/maps

It's there, near condo La Royale : https://www.google.com/maps/place/Nam+Talay+Condominium,+Pattaya+[+Sea+View+]/@12.8583309,100.8995672,721m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x310294066e53a7ed:0xf1f8a06e007e22c6!8m2!3d12.858559!4d100.899502

Finally, a thread with a lot of good information, with a few exceptions of course, but thats what makes it entertaining.  My situation is not like the poster needing a weekend crash pad, but more of a six months on , six months off as I will continue to work about six months a year.  and likely travel a bit for a few weeks at a time for the other six.  Not really intrested in renting a place out when I am gone, but since my place will be empty for weeks on end, need a bit of security.  I like the 'normal folk' Thai or Fahlung, just not loud music, ten people living in a 36sq meter apt, or barking dogs, dogs that growl or bark at me don't tend to live long.

I needed a base in Pattaya , a sort of "crash pad"  instead of travelling back and forth from my house in Bang Saray (and myself and the Mrs. are  having some problems). I bought a 40 Sq. Mtr. pad for 600,000 in Pattaya central. It's about 6 minutes walk from Big C  Extra, Pattaya Klang. Perfect for me, I'm getting tired of driving here in Thailand, either car or motorbike and now I can walk everywhere. It's rough and ready looking from the outside and probably put many people off, but you can work away to your hearts desire and make your unit as beautiful and comfortable as you like. It was just a shell when I moved in. I painted it over,  brought all my family pics, bits and pieces I had collected on my travels  from the house and punched holes everywhere in the walls and made the place my home from home.
You see, when a place stands you as little as this you're not too worried about making it "your own"...really putting your own stamp on it. I even changed my address at Soi 5 to here.
The people that live here can only be described as the "Salt of the Earth". no "airs and graces" about them,  Farangs and Thais, motorbike taxi drivers and school teachers, bar girls (and men I presume) for me, that's one of it's main attractions (I mean the people not the barmen 555). I also have a condo in a sort of "Posh" building that I rent but would much prefer to live where I am now.
'She who must be obeyed" now lives in the house and I am as happy as a 'pig in s - - -"  here.
I intend to buy another condo in this building when I sell either the house or the other condo so
forgive me for not mentioning the name of the project (don't want to get crushed in the stampede 555").
Suffice to say I actually did mention it already so it's up to the Sherlock Holmes's among you to spot it.
Cheers all from this "Happy Chappie".

Nice to read a post from someone Whoes not so far up his own arse like a Tuna Driver for once. Top Man

There are many places selling condo around 900 000 baht. The only problem is that the size is small like 25 sqm or so. What is advised if you want for your living may be better to buy a few years old condo for the same price or so but then larger room. I advise you if you want to buy something first rent a room in the same project for couple of months to make sure you have the right people living there and management is good enough.

Yeah great. Loud music, noisy shouting and screeming kids. Neighbors with no money or who refuse to pay the maintenance fee. Abandoned junk and refuse piling up in the corridors and public areas vandalised and misused. Drug paraphernalia and constant coming and going of addicts looking for a fix and johns looking for a ride. Teen gangs, shootings and scooters racing in the parking lot.

Break-ins, petty crime and no security..

Sure sounds like heaven to me........:whistling:

You do realize that most cities with any sizeable population will have some undesirable areas, right?  I could drive you through parts of Washington, DC where you hope and pray your car doesn't break down.

There is far more serious crime at the big end of any town.  It is just that it is less visible and never policed.  There are more criminals convicted from the lower classes because that is where the police routinely patrol and once charged with an offence the poor seldom have access to quality legal representation.

That's exactly the point I was making . For someone to look down their nose at another when they also

live in the same cess pool is a little odd Dont you think ?

The point I am making is Pattaya is not a cesspool.  It may have some undesirable areas and some undesirable condo complexes  but that is true for most cities.

So if you build your walls high enough you won't get bitten by the same mosquitoes ? Pattaya was built on whoring you most likely visited for that reason and again stayed for that very same reason ! Let's not pretend you are above others and think your social

station is way above others .

Exactly. I live in Pattaya have done so for many years. Like most cities there are good and bad areas. It's possible to have a very comfortable and pleasant lifestyle here. Do I feel the need to socialise with moto taxi drivers and low skilled semi illiterates ? No. Would I socialise with them in my own country ? Nope. It's just asking for trouble. Arguably Pattaya was a lot more risque 15 years ago. More bars, more nudity, more girls less family tourists etc etc.. As much as I enjoyed the nightlife and loved the freedom I still had no wish to live in run down low rent condos or moo bahns. I travel a lot so my home needs to be secure. I like comfort so want quiet, space and good quality fittings and furniture. I don't want to be surrounded by badly maintained houses and rudely built moto taxi shacks. I like Thai markets and foodstalls but don't want to live next to one anymore than I'd want to live next to a school or football stadium. Wanting a nice house in a nice area is normal isn't it ?

Or do people of means intentionally move to Thailand so they can live in a 4k a Month rental room and live on 100baht a day ? I though they lived like that because they had no choice ? That's a revelation to me. So those living in poverty, surrounded by crime, noise and filth actually like it and don't wish to improve their

surroundings ? Really ? So why do they all seem so keen to win the lottery ?

There is good and bad at all levels of society.. But why the need to put the lowest echelon on a pedestal and eulogise them ? Patently ignoring the fact that there are many bad eggs amongst them. Talk about rose tinted glasses..:whistling:

Having the means and the oppotunity to purchase sex whenever one felt the need is one of the Pattaya's benefits. Nothing wrong with that. But it's  just as available in pretty much any city in the World. Singapore despite it's puritanical and clean image has plenty of working girls and nightlife. Even amongst hookers there is a hierarchy.

"Street walkers" thru to "high class escorts" Society is stratified and always will be.

Even amongst the great socialist unwashed some are more equal than others.

so lets not pretend that all people are the same.. I wouldn't put myself on a level with a common thug any more than I would expect Albert Einstein to accept me as his peer..

I'm not sure how you make the giant leap from my saying that I don't think Pattaya is a 'cesspool' to feeling that by saying that I think my social station is 'way above others'.  Huh???   And, by the way, I didn't first come for the 'whoring' and I don't stay for the 'whoring'.  Don't you love how some posters just always assume things?  Hmm-I came for the 'whoring' so I guess everyone else did too!!!  I live in Pattaya because my partner works here.  We find it to be a nice place to live and we like living by the sea. It's by no means perfect, but it's not a 'cesspool', either.   If we weren't here, we might be in Ft. Lauderdale or Daytona Beach--and we'd be doing much the same everyday things we do here.  There are likely many couples/families like us in Pattaya.  Not frequenting Walking Street or Soi 6 doesn't make us 'above others'--we are just living our lives differently.  Pattaya may have been 'built' somewhat on sex but that doesn't mean that it totally defines it today-or that it would be the only reason someone would choose to live here.

If you lay down with dogs you tend to get fleas . That's what happens when you breath the same air as the peasants you dislike so much . Get off your high horse . The op asked if there was anywhere to live for a decent price then the usual suspects come out swinging like John Wayne with the only thing that's found them love (their wallet) and it's me who's wrong ? You couldn't make this up

I looked into this 4 - 5 years ago. Back then prices started around 400.000 - 500.000. People tried to sell them for 990.000, but you could bargain it down to half price.

(What happened ? I eventually decided to do something quite different than buying a co-op "condo" in Pattaya, but that is another story.)

  • 4 months later...

i would just airbnb it monthly when u want to go down. thats what i did. great places for 15-20k a month and just enjoy the view, pool etc. dont even have to worry about cleaning it when u leave.

if u get tired of it just book a new unit.

if you really need to by and just have the place sit vacant its on u. bad idea.
