I'm from the uk and my 60 day visa is soon to expire, if I cross a land border do I get 15 or 30 days, and once I've got the visa can I then extend at an immigration office for another 30 days? Or should I extend this 60 days visa and then do a border run? Which is best, but mainly concerned with how many days I get at a land border? After that I'm return  back to the uk, just need to arrange what's best for the next 60 days.

thanks

  • You will get 30 days entering at a land border. Out/in visa exempt entry isn't available at all borders.
  • Yes, a 30 day visa exempt entry is extendable by 30 days at immigration for 1,900 baht.
  • It is better to extend the 60 day tourist visa entry by 30 days than doing a border hop (1,900 baht).

You want 60 days in addition to the 60 days you got when you entered with the tourist visa. I agree with elviajero that it is advisable first to get a 30-day extension on your current permission to stay, then do a border run for a visa-exempt entry giving you a further 30 days. This leaves you with the option of another 30-day extension in case you should need some extra time in Thailand.

I don't know if you're aware of this or when exactly your visa expires or your future plans in 2017 but there will be limitation for the border run which will be effective by Dec 31. Just letting you know or reminding. You can see it here:

A 60 day entry on a tourist visa can be extended for an additional 30 days at the immigration office serving your residential area.

You can do the extension a week or so before your current permission to stay ends. The additional 30 days is added on to your current permission, so you lose nothing by going in before the current permission expires.

On a UK passport you get 30 days at either a border crossing or upon arrival by air. In either event you can extend it for an additional 30 days at the immigration office serving your residential area. As above, you can do the extension a week or so before the first 30 days expires. You lose nothing by doing it a little early.

once I've got the visa

When doing the visa exempt entry you are not given a visa. You're given a 30 day permission to stay without needing a visa.

Hi, so if I extend this 60 day visa for another 30 days, then after that has expired where can I get a visa exempt entry, does it have to be a land border? Or can I get this at my local immigration office?

Sorry, I've never had to do this before as I usually got a double entry visa and just did an in/out border run once.

Regards

You would get a 30 day visa exempt entry by doing an out and back trip out of the country by land or air.
