BANGKOK: -- THE HIGHLY controversial Computer Crime bill draft needs to be in place to protect national security due to global cyber threats, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha insisted yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the new bill does not damage people’s rights as suggested by some organisations. The proposed legislation will protect the public from various threats on cyber security, including terrorism, personal data theft, fraud and online crimes against children.

During the weekly briefing, Prayut said: “If we have insufficient measures, there could be conflicts in many aspects. We have seen terrorism and transnational crimes. They also use [online] channels. Please understand us.”

"Please understand us.” :shock1:

Snowdon lets us all know the extent of the US Government surveillance programs. This bill is straight out of that play book.

These fools have no idea what they are up against. Hackers are anonymous and skilled in ways they can never imagine.

If they are intent on staying in power they shouldn't take half-measures. Cut off all internet providers and cell phone service.

The good general is correct.   It will not effect the rights of the average Thai, because the average Thai has no rights.   He is just told what do by by his grumpy jowliness and that is that.

"I think many people understand reasons behind the bill. They just don’t speak out loud,” he said.  How can you argue with this sort of logic.  He is all the powerful and he is in Thai government to stay, and he has lots of imaginary friends, they just don't speak out loud

The ARMY speaks the truth, right, we must respect the wise judgment of these hard working professionals on the move.

I know, that "white lies" are deemed to be part of "Thainess", I just didn't know that "blatant lies" are too...

it is not the lie it is the mistake, of course...

This can be wrapped up in whatever nice packaging you want but we all know what it's about.

It's not to protect anyone from external threats, this is more to do with suppression of internal expression. We all know there is a raft of topics, widely known, but impossible to express openly. This is just designed to strengthen the suppression of those off limit topics.

It's a little like the role of the Thai military, not really designed to fight external forces, primarily used to suppress internal 'threats'

Not buying what you are selling. Nothing will protect the public.

When Governments become actively involved in monitoring beyond the norm, you are now interfering in the lives of the people , no amount of rhetoric will convince otherwise and being a Junta any move towards establishing a police state is after all right in your domain , however their are some smart people out there that can see through your B/S , and as an afterthought , this time the students don't have to protest on the streets to win back democracy and they also have friends right around the world to help them.....................................:coffee1:

never forget this, nothing is simple.

whenever you see the word "privacy" also think of it's flip side called "secrecy".

and that the negative side to less privacy.... which also means less secrecy... is ****much**** bigger than the positive side of "privacy" ever ends up to be.....

.... if you are everyday normal folk.  so on this one I side with the Thai government 100%.

nothing is simple in this world.

whenever we see the word "privacy" we should think of it's flip side called "secrecy".

and that the negative side to less privacy.... is generally smaller than the negative side of the secrecy also lost....

that is, for everyday normal folks.  so on this one I would side with the Thai government 100%.

Just look what other countries around the World do in

the name of "National security",they use it to curb peoples

rights and freedoms.

privacy also means secrecy.

and I'm ****not**** thinking of "terrorism" or drugs..... I'm thinking of finance [and maybe also some really awful stuff that is too depressing to even mention on a public post]

personal examples:

example:  I cannot file a [Thai] tax return because bank secrecy means my paperwork is in the name of a nominee whether I like it or not and I cannot change that [unless I am Thai or dual Thai and US].

example: it's why we have to fill out FATCA forms

example:  I cannot invest in ASEAN small caps [other than Thai] for the same reason unless I pretend to be a "teacher" for 6 months....

etc etc etc.  it works great for big guys with "private banking" but then the nonsense stuff still falls on the heads of everyday little folks.

but if there is less "privacy" and more tech stuff... this may all change.. and seems to be doing so.. esp. in asia/ASEAN.

I like that.  in fact, it's more than just liking something.

bring it on... give us more of this stuff because as with everything, it works in more than one way and if you have nothing to worry about [hide]... then this kind of policy direction will works out better than the FATCA nonsense and the only rants are of folks who not only don't need to file a Thai tax return [and get a refund dudes for those not in the know about how that works for resident investors.. Thai as well as non Thai]..... they don't wanna either. that kind of thing.... but... also.... for folks hiding things a lot worse than tax return info :-(  eh?

please, don't do ranting on THEIR behalf. it's like the pre-2016 pro Oil "deniers" on the old Climate "debate" used to be [which as soon as Obama leaves will be too late for politics of any kind to heavy handle anymore].

Does anyone have a link to the detailed changes to the computer crimes act?

If national security was the basis for this new law, then the first sentence in the bill should have said "Only for the purposes of national security". The way the law is now, it is far too over-reaching, and can be used against anyone who expresses a critical opinion about any one or any thing in Thailand using the internet.

If stopping a porno site constitutes  national security I'm joining the security..................................:cheesy:

this is a law to give the police power to break into peoples homes, like the west had to do, now drugs are being legalized they need other laws to harass dissidents

This is a non event.

Access the internet through a no-log VPN connection, problem solved

The little general cannot even keep gov websites up, but he wants Thai citizens to believe in him to protect them from hackers and scammers. Thais don't need talk from anybody about this. They need education. Nearly all hacks succeed due to uninformed users, not oppressed users.

Can anyone explain to me what Maewang99 is on about in his messages in numbers 12, 13 and 15 above?   Before he tells me that I must be as thick as a plank, let me say that I have understood all the thousands of posts on Thai Visa Forum over the past two years or so, but his rants are either way above my head, or possibly just meaningless.

They will just make it up as they go along, adding more and  more laws,

under the umbrella of the computer crime act.

Usual problem for people with a track record like the PM's because as soon as he ' assures ' etc the average person believe the exact opposite.

Fool me once etc.

They can just ban the internet in Thailand

Since you do not care much about privacy, please let us all know your net worth and where you can be found.  ;-)

Privacy is sacred and you do not deprive legions of decent people in order to catch a few bad ones.  That is what bad people want.  They want the government to make the lives of decent people uncomfortable to create unrest and fear.

Will this new bill allow me to continue to criticise who and what, as is my won't?

start spreading the news

Ah yes and Thailand is a master at catching cyber criminals that seem to be running circles around them. I am sure that if America cannot stop hacking Thailand will not do any better. It just incenses the criminals more and invites attack. Pass the cheese.

I am trying but its not working. Can I get a convince me shot in the arm somewhere. I love the smile on the guy's face above in the photo. I would buy anything from him. Reminds me of an episode 60 years ago where I was at a carnival and a barker was selling a bag of "stuff" for 20 dollars (a lot of money in them days) He was getting no bites so he started adding stuff to the point where I dug out 20 dollars and fought my way through the crowd. Later looking into the bag with a clearer head I valued everything at about $5. Caught hell from the wife at the time when I came home.
