You  can do the crossing to get a 30 day visa exempt entry without a problem.

You will need to pay $35 or 1500 baht for a Lao visa on arrival.

You will have to take the shuttle bus across the bridge you cannot walk it.

Sorry, NO NO NO, you will only get 15 days on a visa excempt, on a U-turn cross-over... If you need more you have to get a visa from Thai consulate, now it's free... but it will require a 2 day, 1 night stay in Vientiane. Apply before 11:30 weekdays and pick up 2nd day after 13;00

a tip, if you don't mind spending the weekend in Laos, apply on a Friday and pick up on the Monday, seriously less "Visa -Runners" in line.

Get your facts right before shouting, the OP is a USA citizen  so will get 30 days, this applies if entering by land or air

Yup

Under the G7 rule since he is from the USA that he may not be aware of.

I was surprised to see that Wikipedia backs you up on this. Apparently, walking on the bridge is allowed. I have never seen anyone do it. Maybe, if I am there again, and the weather is good, I might try it. If a nice breeze is blowing, it could be a pleasant walk.

I know you are trying to help, but your information is wrong. If from a G7 country you get 30 days via land or air.

You will learn that Ubonjoe is always up to date on these things. 99.999% of the time if UbonJoe provides info it is correct!
