BUCHAREST: -- Romania was tipped to have its first female and first Muslim prime minister, until the country’s president on Tuesday rejected the Social Democrat Party’s nomination.

The winners of a general election two weeks ago, the PSD is furious with the president, giving a strong reaction at a news conference.

Liviu Dragnea, the PSD leader, said: “This man wants to trigger a political crisis in Romania.”

“We will conduct a quick analysis and if, following this, we reach the conclusion that it is good for the country to suspend the president, I will not hesitate.”

Romania’s president, Klaus Iohannis, said he carefully examined the pros and cons of the nomination and decided not to accept it, without giving reasons.

He called for the PSD and its coalition partner to come up with another name.

The rejected nominee, Sevil Shhaideh, is a close ally of the PSD leader, who was ruled out for the post of prime minister because of a previous criminal conviction.

There's more to the story that just what is shown here.

The PSD leader has a criminal record for inflating voting numbers during a 2012 referendum. The President said he wouldn't appoint a Prime Minister that has a criminal record, so the PSD leader (Dragnea) decides that the woman (Shhaideh) should be selected instead.

They don't mention that Shhaideh is Dragnea's goddaughter, or that she is married to a Syrian who was for many years (at least 22) a member of Assad's government and still openly supports him. Also, apparently Shhaideh is already the Minister of Development so it's not like she's some "martyr" for the cause because of her gender or religion, though obviously that's the angle they are going for. I'm sure the fact that she is also an ethnic Turk had nothing to do with the decision.

Nothing you have said; changes the fact that the person is a Muslim; and this will attract people that Romania does not want. And from Syrian roots.

Smart move by the President.

I guess you didn't read to the end where it says she's an ethnic Turk. Not only that, but if you google images of her she's not wearing a scarf on her head. Not much of believer.  What you also fail to note is that the party that nominated her win a huge victory in the latest Romanian elections. ANd the the President who rejected her nomination comes from the party that just got badly beaten. And never before has a nominee been rejected. And in this case, no reason was even given. I hope they can suspend the President and get on with her selection.

Her Husband is Syrian. He will change her.

Remember his religion will over power her.

The President is correct.

Just look at Germany. You think your leaders regret letting in 1 million potential terrorists.

She's a native Romanian.  What has immigration got to do with this?  And "his religion will over power her" because you say so?

Again back to half truths and false media. Nothing is what it appears to be and there are 2 sides to everything.

Husband is a Shia supporter of Assad. Don't all the right wingers on this forum applaud Assad for fighting terrorism.

Yeah  Right!

Current Muslim population is 0.03% very, very  long way to go, plus Romania is not a destination country for Muslim asylum seekers.
