Tourism still robust, despite cheap-tour crackdowns

DESPITE the government crackdown on illegal tourism businesses and cheap “zero-dollar tours”, China is expected to remain the strongest source for arrivals to Thailand, according to Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul.

China remained the main source market during low season in the third quarter, when the Thai government began the crackdown. A total of 2.4 million Chinese visitors travelled to Thailand between July and September, representing a rise of 14 per cent and generating 15 per cent more revenue than in the same period last year.

Chinese media is reporting a 60% decrease in tourists to Thailand due to the zero dollar tour crackdown.

That's a wee bit more than Thailand is reporting.

So i guess the free visas for G7 tourists is a christmas present

......such giving folk!

:wai:

14% rise?

read somewhere a 14% fall

The Tourism and Sports Minister says:

".......China is expected to remain the strongest source for arrivals to Thailand"

That may well be true but what she is not saying is that is probably because the other sources are drying up and going to neighbouring Asian countries that are cheaper, safer and have cleaner and better and more appealing attractions. Thailand will remain a magnet for sex tourism.

It follows along the same line as the lottery system. A ball jumps out with a number on it and that number becomes a fact. Spin the wheel Lucille.

robust???....or maybe its meant to read "a bust"

Tourism still doing well this high season in spite of uncoordinated efforts of various ministries and officials to kill it.

Wonder what the numbers would be if the government did not bungle the Chinese tourist business.   Looks like pettiness and being penny wise and pound foolish got the best of Thailand again.

If a crackdown on zero dollar tours was successful, then there should be a higher ratio of revenues to number of tourists, ie., 25% more revenues generated by 14% more tourists. But what is being reported is a virtual status quo - add 1% more tourists get 1% more revenues.

PHUKET is experiencing a shorter peak season this year due to a change in the market, and it is a matter of concern for hospitality firms when it comes to the 2017 low season, according to Bill Barnett, managing director of the C9 Hotelworks consultancy firm.

How many times have I read this: 'despite the cheap-tours crackdown', since, as far as I am well informed, one, single, of the probable score of, 'zero Dollar tour' scams has been 'exposed'? And mind you, the media have even become, very, silent about that one... What about 'the big guys' leading the scam? Are they still un-located, un-available, or what? I guess we would have been told when they would have been caught and jailed... And all the people and companies, ...and 'officials', illegally, making money with that, one, scam? ZZZZZZZ, total 'radio silence'!

Would it be that the 'hi-so's' of TAT (it 'seems' TAT is a 'juicy business' 'owned' by 'old elite', which forms all of the (water-)head of it, complemented by self-appointed pawns, collecting large salaries, benefitting from numerous 'advantages', and paybacks of huge expense notes) are getting afraid they won't reach their previsions, and might get some General angry about their (utterly) poor performance, maybe even treathening their fat jobs...?

When you would start to make real reforms in the country Mr. PM, don't forget to also put TAT under your microscope, please.
