BANGKOK: -- Deputy spokesman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) Col Sirijan Ngathong said throughout the first four days of the weeklong "No Drunk Driving" from December 29 till January 1, a total of 16,092 traffic offenders involving motorcycles were booked.

 

Of these offenders, 9,111 riders would face legal action, and 891 motorcycles were impounded.

 

She said for public transport vehicles and personal cars, a total of 12,664 traffic offences were booked, and driving licences of 4,622 drivers were seized and 506 cars were impounded.

 

Altigether, she said in the first four days from December 29-January 1, a total of 2,981 vehicles were impounded, breaking down to 2,027 motorcycles, and 954 cars.

On paper it appears better than normal, but again if one was to look a little deeper it would appear that those poorer, easier targets on bikes are fair game while the more dangerous pick ups and cars get less attention (maybe it could be that there are more bikes around though perhaps)

And giving the vehicles back in a couple of days is still hardly an incredibly harsh sanction. All a bit hollow, but if it keeps at least some people out of the morgue then that's a plus I guess

the police is not doing their job

nor were the late governments

We need a Mothers Against Drink Driving (MADD) here in Thailand. They succeeded in demonizing drink driving in the US and UK. They could do the same here.

If you saw the traffic on Phuket Island, and the almost total ignorance of road sense displayed by drivers, you would appreciate the need for a couple of stiff drinks in order to give one the courage to drive here.

What does it matter, the drunken bast@rds will just get their cars/motorbikes back when they sober up. TiT.
