Or they just did not want to be "seen going" but snuck off some other time by themselves...

This question has occurred to me a few times in the past and I think you've hit the nail on the head there. Those of us that have lived here for some time are used to prostitution, while the average visitor to KSR is a tourist or backpacker fresh off the boat and a good proportion of those types of visitors have no desire to get involved.

And those that do would certainly not want their friends to know!

Lets face it guys .

The back packers are out there experiencing life .

The sex -pats are former staying at home guys , drinking beer and watching porn movies , move to Thailand after getting divorced and living out their porn movie fantasies .

Back packers not live in Issan, only western rejects live there

Back packers spend their money on buckets on the islands , not bothered about seeing a single mother village girl trying to dance provocatively in a bar

Come on easy,      I'll bet you're really just "asking for a friend".    smile.gif

really. its an honest curiosity question.

as an ex backpacker from 10 years ago and full time resident of bkk,, i often wondered this question.

but now (from this thread)  it seems the answer is to do with the "Crown" owning much of the area around KhaoSarn Road.

and also to do with Zoning of red light night life areas.
and KhaoSarn Road is NOT one of these zones.

that makes sense to me.

Patpong & Nana plaza are the only places with go-go bars in BKK

KSR is a back packers place and they generally dont like sleazy paid for entertainment

They are not the only places. You have Soi cowboy and some Thai go-go bars in little sois around BKK.

As for back packers they are not in Thailand for sex. Most are looking to travel and live cheaply. A go-go bar is not cheap. They want their cheap drugs, booze entertainment. Take a look around Koh San road it's mostly cheap hotels / guest houses playing old DVD's in the front lobby.

I think there's some merit in that.

I knew a guy who had a motel in a touristy area of Queensland, Australia, and made a reasonable living.  Then he converted the place into a backpackers', rooms became dorms, as many beds as he was legally allowed to have in a given space, and he made megabucks.

His observation was that backpackers eat as cheaply as they can, sleep as cheaply as they can,  pay as little as they can for everything, and don't wash, clothes or personally, as they should.   He said the laundry was seldom used, and bathrooms needed little cleaning!!

Interestingly, there didn't seem to be a budget on booze, but he had to scrap the tab system in the bar and drinks had to be paid for on delivery.....too many walk outs.

I think he was saying that backpackers are the same breed as farangs that live in Isaan, not too much cash. Whether this is true of the majority of farang there I do not know.

That is a normal road with bars and restaurant for ordinary tourist not for those after Agogo

My experience is that most or many "ordinary" tourists like to visit a gogo bar to see what it's all about.

Very well.

I'm glad you understood I was just "pulling your leg", easy.    Under similar circumstances I would likely could  have wondered the same thing.

KSR is generally full of cheap ass tourists,,, That's completely fine of course,,, the several times I've been,, I've always been, "entertained" by those tables of say 3-4, "tourist's" that will order a single $100baht beer,, or 2,, nurse it, share it,, for an hour or so,,, then argue over which one of them drank the most, therefore which one owes the most,, They always seemed to look at me in amazement, that I'd sit alone, enjoying myself people watching, and consume 3-4 of those $100baht beers, AND leave $20baht tip,,, lololol,,,, it's why I quit going, and actually steered visiting friends away from it,, there's much better ways/places to spend time enjoying a cold beer, and people watching,,,

Using the $ sign and also writing Baht afterwards is confusing, one needs to go

Did you understand what I meant?,, hardly believe you assumed I paid $100 a bottle,, so if you understood,,, what's the problem? Don't really feel like going thru the trouble of changing/selecting a keyboard option to display the proper Thai Baht $.... jeez

$ and Baht are two different currencies, theres no need to press the $ sign if you are talking about Baht . Theres no need to change anything, just refrain from pressing the $ sign

Probably one of the stupidest stories I have read.  Oh, then they look at you in amazement?  You must be truly amazing..

It probably wasnt an "amazement" look, it was probably a quizzical look and they wondered why he was sitting there and watching them

Travel agents in Singapore offer Patpong 'Tiger Shows' as part of their itinerary for 'normal customers' and I've known middle-age people who've signed up for them for their 'exoticness'. The one time I went into a tiger show place (with a former Singaporean gf) there were quite a few couples in the audience. Another friend from Canada did a tour of SE Asia, and the women in the tour group were brought to a place in Patpong that had naked guy dancers.

There is a big confusion on that.  Some think they are offering "Tiger shows"  it is actually "Thai girl shows".  Sounds exactly the same with an obvious different meaning.  :)

Considering that Bacpackers frown at a 100 baht beer, tge price of a gogo bar would be terrifying for the great unwashed.

On a serious note though, definatley about zoning, and of course who owns a lot of the land in that area

I'm sure backpackers shower every day. They came for an extended holiday to see the sights on as little money as possible. I think it takes more balls and is a more worthwhile adventure than to come with tons of cash to buy whores and beer.

The only thing they can pull is bugs , out of their hair .

Most back packers are well educated have interest in local culture and are on a low budget because just out of university.they spend their money not in overpriced bars and on prostitutes in comparison with u .

Confusion is possible. But the ones that I've seen have been quite clear about what one might see, ping pong balls and all. A tour agency won't last long if it sends unsuspecting customers to patpong when they're expecting to pet striped felines...

Do you guys know there is an area for go-go bars for Thais? I went into a couple one time. Work differently. They are not allowed in the farang bars. A taxi driver wanted me to take him to a go-go so he could get in.

Was Sitting in Tiki Bar (formerly Lucky Lukes) and saw a couple backpackers go into Nana Plaza. They left after a few minutes. Not their type of scene/don't have that kind of spendable cash?

I suspect it might be a bit to close to the parts of town with royal/govt connections...

There's another go-go area as well... Saphan Kwai area has one too. Just isn't on the foreigner map.

I remember hearing recently it got raided and closed because of underage girls (not enough tea?)

KSR does not sound like a place to hang out if you are really interested in the culture....
