Election delay fine if road map intact: Abhisit
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said Thursday that he was not worried about the next general election being delayed until next year, as long as the political “road map” remained intact.

He said the next national vote would be held in 2018 if the timeframe allowed for the drafting of its organic laws – 240 days – and the preparations for the voting – 150 days – were fully utilised.

The count for the timeframes start after the new constitution is promulgated, which is expected early next month.

With all the discussions with road maps, organic law, a new constitution it would seem they are forming a whole new country, but for whom one would wonder.  Without debate, one must rely on the wisdom of those who are self appointed.  There are many good examples of working democracies in Asia.  Too bad Thailand decided not to reference any of them.  Hope this whole exercise is not just the privileged and entitled few.

I guess he knows that this way is his only chance of winning.

Can't wait for his next gripping press release..... :coffee1:

I'd say the military is retrograding the country back to 1933 rather than forming a new country.

While there are some exemplary democratic monarchy models of government in the world such as the UK and Japan, none allow the military separate sovereignty - something the RTM has maintained since 1933.

Give me one good example of a working democracy in Asia, bearing in mind some so call democracy's have had the same political party for the past Fifty years, these are Singapore and Malaysia. both have rigged electoral boundaries that give the incumbent an advantage.

And this is Thailand's problem and whilst the Military can hid behind LM, unless there is a peoples revolt, they will keep calling the shots. and if you do some research I think you may find that somebody indeed did want to modernize the crown and woke up dead in the morning.

I'd have thought Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India would all be good starting points. Indonesia is looking pretty interesting too. The Indian prime minister has described democracy as "the best opportunity for the human spirit to flourish".

You mean a return to the heady days of the Great Mollusc?

General to self. He's our boy. The give away was the road map intact comment the one near and dear thing to the good generals heart.

He will never win unless he is the only candidate and it is made a criminal offense not to vote for him.

Even then he would fluff it and somehow manage to lose.

Thailand's Orwellian Yellow shirts - TOY story.

This (Abhisit) is an example of the Bangkok "elite." So what do you think the future has in store for Thailand? I hope I am wrong but I think, Cambodia circa late 60s to late 80s.

2010 was a dress rehearsal

What?! Have the North Vietnamese established sanctuaries in Issan and are running weapons through Thailand?

Cambodia was a country torn apart by both Vietnamese and American interference.A very different scenario to Thailand.

And don't forget, the constitution passed in a referendum. It's all very well to say no open debate was allowed but the fact was if the people  hated Prayuth enough they would have  voted no.

But they didn't.

Maybe Abhisit has been to re education camp

Japan and India are the picks there , India uses a type of Westminster ,Thai wont use that it's too strict , Sth Korea , Taiwan maybe, give Indo a miss money corruption and hard liners looking at Sharia law, I'd go for japan , mind the Junta had a look at the Germany system.

Mark - ... what a wuss

2018 is perfect for the army to continue the clean up thailand campaign because that will STOP the minute that a democratic government steps in as has been proven through out history

In other words, I'm prepared to wait if you guarantee me the job.

Feed someone the same diet day after day after day and after a while they get to like it. Its called wearing down ones will to resist. The first constitution went down in flames and the people were told in a gentile way guess what "we can do this forever"

With an appointed PM, an appointed Senate, myriad new "organic laws", courts and overseeing organizations, "reforms" you will love, requirements to follow the "20 year plan", any election is really just lip-stick on a pig.

Amazing it's taking them this long to doll the swine up?

The first constitution needn't even get to a referendum. It was shot down by the Reform Council.

Pheua Thai told their supporters to reject the constitution. Not enough of them did.

Prayuth knows fully well he couldn't do this forever. He remembers General Sujinda. Business will not tolerate the army for ever.

Thanks for the update. Business seems to have really taken a back seat to what is going on but of course we are never privy to all the back room processes. There must be restless factions in the army as there is a limited time to climb to the top of the ladder and with the large number of generals wishing to advance and the limited number of slots available for advancement one would think the herd would be milling about and mooing. Just my humble opinion.

"Continue"???

You didn't know.

All examples of the Army (one uniformed mafia gang, largely Yellow Shirt) cleaning out the sources of income of another uniformed Mafia gang (the police, largely Red Shirt). These are trivial examples that you give - I'm waiting for some real action on corruption. You know - whistleblower protection, an independent Corruption Commission, anti-corruption legislation with teeth that's enforced. The rest is just window-dressing
