Some sort of dove, about 2 weeks to hatch the eggs then about a month until they fledge.

Parents take turns sitting, so food isn't an issue.

Just leave alone and observe, I find you can get pretty close without causing disturbance.

Probably best to leave nature take its course
I heard that if they smell humans they discard their babies

OK
If it's some sort of dove, the birdhouse will have been too small for his family.
Will need to add a bigger birdhouse.
Thank you for the information.

I have two ceiling fans on my front porch.  The doves have taken it upon themselves to build nest on the top of the fans most likely because they are hard to get to.  I stopped using the fans and tied screen nets below to catch the young ones if they fell out.  The first time that they left I built platforms on the wall next to the fans and moved their nest there, but when they came back the ignored the old nests and built new ones on the fans.  You should wait until the young ones hatch and fly away and then remove the nests and keep removing them as they build them in the future!  They are stubborn critters!

Depends how big the container is, pigeons and doves are very closely related. We get all shapes of doves nesting around the house but pigeons seem to steer clear.

I wonder why so many people want to get rid of the pigeons.

They are welcome in my birdhouse and I am building now a bigger house with protection against cats and other predators.

I love it when I come and see the bird sitting in the food bowl, hatching her eggs.

Wonders of nature

The pigeon was not at the nest yesterday morning.
I was thinking that she/he might have flew away for looking for food as the days before, but when the pigeon didn't show up for a few hours, I was worried.
I went to look inside the nest and found 2 little pigeons dead.
They looked like new borns to me.
Making a bigger bird house now.

You are 'worried' about a feral pigeon?  I've heard it all now - they are rats with wings and pests in same league as cockroaches, rats etc.

these kaffir lime tree's have 2" needles that are very very sharp.

Very sorry to hear this ,

A few years ago the men (and monkey) knocking down coconuts in the area around my house dislodged 2 baby doves/pigeons (no feathers) - and brought them to my house....

Amazingly, they survived my care - although the biggest/brightest/most active that I released first, was killed by my dogs a few days later.  Presumably because he felt 'safe' with me (and my dogs, which were obviously always around) .

More cheerfully, the smaller/more timid bird was released a week later and (as far as I know) is still around and doing well.

Ignore the odd idiot going on about them being vermin (roll eyes).

Thanks for the post.

My child was so excited to see the "Circle of life".
My child was watching every morning before school and every evening how the birds made a nest, lay eggs and stayed on the eggs for hatching them.
Taking pictures of the birds and the nest and showing the pictures with proud at school.
And when the moment came the my child could watch the baby birds, they were dead born.
My child was very disappointed about that.
