Your idiotosphere is a special place.

Each post contains more hysterical and alarmist rhetoric over a nothing video and has sent you on a rant.

Spelt with a 'u' and capitalised, if it's OK.

Yes my idiotosphere is indeed a special place.

Your following sentence is you once again trying to pull one over (whoever) with garbage pronouncements. I have not been ranting, I have clearly and precisely responded to your posts (with a bit of Jesus thrown in for fun) and given reasons - or context - for doing so. Instead of engaging with the issues you have failed to answer my various points, as is the case now with your diversion.

This would be why I stopped reading your post(s on this topic), because you lack reasonable content due to your basic position being indefensible.

C'mon guys why can't you give the Thai students a bit of a break?

It's about what this says in the wider context and for the future. It's simply not just a positive story, and it's not the best example of something that should be seen as positive, because it's really quite sad.

Nice for the kids and their families. On that level, yes, good for them! It's just normal people doing normal things. To spin it negatively is just mean-spirited.

Unfortunately, the nature of normal is a deeply sad thing, unless you don't really give a damn, are in denial, or part of the problem, because at the societal level this is highly ironic, where these guys got a prize as other students may get grabbed in the night; where demonstrators outside the US embassy some months back could congregate in numbers more than 5 whilst regurgitating pro-system propaganda, as others are told they will be - or are - arrested.

It's not about the kids.

Squeegee-I can categorically assure you that I do not wear rose tinted spectacles about Thailand-nor,indeed,any other country on Earth including my own.

Anyone who has read my posts about the seedier side of life where I now reside may know that-or not-as the case maybe.

I do not happen to see myself as part of the problem but you are quite welcome to perceive me as such, for, after all,you and I shall probably never meet.

I arrived here on a whim; stayed for the quim.

Absolutely right. When people are living under a tyranny (not here of course) and then a certain type of highly positive video about that country wins a government award - that is a deeply, deeply political act and statement. How could it be otherwise?

Incidentally, I wonder if any of the foreigners interviewed happened to say something negative about the land they are visiting (would think that at least one person would have done); but would that make it through to the final cut, or be left on the cutting-room floor? Having participated in such filmed interviews by Thai students, I know that both myself and other foreigners do make critical comments about certain things that go on here.

But there was no sign of such opinion being represented in the finished, prize-winning video.

I wonder why ....?

Odysseus, I wasn't referring to you at all. I was trying to answer your question. You shouldn't take it personally.

By the way, it's best to use the quote function so people are notified if you want them to know you responded to something. I only saw your reply out of sheer coincidence, as I was about to ditch the thread.

It is probably better the students have a deluded opinion of what the average expat thinks of Thailand. If they knew how snarly and unpleasant we really are they would be even less welcoming of us than they already are.

Just look at the venom in this thread. If the students read this thread and understood what was being said what impression do you think they would have?

Award-winning... :cheesy:

A funner video would have been what Thai students think of us.

Oh God - I am sick and tired of this unrelenting nationalistic propaganda.

Yes, we all know: Thailand is perfect. Thailand is the best place in the world. Thailand is uniquely beautiful. The Thais are a fun-filled, laughing and loving, loyal and sincere people. Thailand has discovered the cure for AIDS, cancer, heart disease, stroke ... on and on.

And Thais NEVER would dream of raping and murdering innocent tourists on their charming Thai islands - and pinning the blame on powerless Burmese servants.

Well done students: your film is at the cutting edge of questioning the country you live in. If as a student you tow the party line to this extent - what the hell are you going to be like when you are fifty?

Right! Fascism and Dictatorship are cool, cool, cool. Let's have more of it (say these wonderful, critically-thinking, prize-winning students). And Thailand can be the proud hub of all that wonderful political enlightenment and progress.

Yeah! Let's make some videos about how all the foreigners just love fascism and autocracy. Bring it on!

Very eloquently put! You should take up politics - but not here

I'm still a newbie, only a year here, but the recent 'passing' opened my eyes to the true Thailand.

There's a very good reason that this website isn't popularised overseas!

No like Thailand ? Farang go home

Personally I enjoy Thailand for the constant visa runs and knowing I'm in a place where it's safe to invest and build a family with my wife.

Fine example of the Thai education system.

Maybe the parents should get a refund.

Short Sweet To The Point OK see you in the Bankruptcy court very soon

I don't get the vitriol on this thread at all. Are people complaining they are not represented in this clip because they didn't show any fat old dude hanging out with his Issaan whore?. The video contest was to show Thailand seen from the eyes of tourists, not bitter thaivisa regs. And guess what, the video showed standard touristy stuff : markets, spas, elephant rides, street food, floating markets etc... that millions of tourists enjoy. I think it's weird that didn't show anything about temples, ruins, beaches and national parks but all in all, not a bad clip, except for the horrid music.

PS : completely misleading thread title, maybe done voluntarily to induce a 5 pages long thread full of ranting expats.

Not at all. The tens of thousands of "expats", those who are resident here on a yearly basis, with or wihout families, spend far more than the average tourists on their two/three week holiday where they are enjoying the elephant  & crocodile shows, pad Thai, fried bugs, temples and the parks etc.................................oh, and the naughty nightlife where available.

Do you somehow feel that Thailand does not want you?

Not exactly. . Yes, one individual pattaya sexpat may spend more per annum than the one tourist who comes for a week, but I suggest you do the math because the per capita spending  per tourist is significantly higher. Just consider the lodging alone; 1 tourist will spend 3,000 minimum per night on average for a  basic room. That's 21,000 per week. The typical  pattaya sex pat is spending less than that per month for  his hovel. That tourist will have a turnover of at least 3X a month, meaning the tourist revenue  per month for lodgings alone is going to be 3X  that of the sexpat. Then consider the meals, drinking,  sex fees, shopping all compressed in the 1-2 week period and wham bam  you get a much greater contribution to the economy  from tourists than from the typical impoverished pattaya sexpat.

Unless that expat has a job skill or investment sor other assets of use to thailand, then yes you are correct, the country doesn't need the  expat. No country needs him, despite the inflated sense of importance so many TVFers have of themselves. Thailand doesn't need anymore crappy teachers, or penny stock traders or IT contract workers. It needs  innovators, wealth creators, entrepreneurs, scientists etc. Unfortunately, the immigration and labour laws are such that the higher quality foreigners are discouraged and blocked from  moving to Thailand.

How dare you refer to my wife as an Issan whore, I will have you know she is a village slut, before go off referring to her as a whore, get your facts right !

There is no "vitriol" or "hate" here! If the headline said "tourists" instead of "expats" no one would have even blinked! But if you seriously want to tell me, that this pile of stupid cliches, is what anyone, LIVING here, is thinking, when they hear "Thailand", you should get off the meds...and fast!

No vitriol or hate? Here are few excerpts from the thread

"I am sick and tired of this unrelenting nationalistic propaganda." followed by a weird tirade about fascism.

"The members of the jury should be hung by the thumbs for 24h., above a crocodile pit, LOL"

"they regurgitated the simple-minded trash"

"those clueless students"

" you know how childish thais are especially uni students, they have no idea how the rest of the world operates""

"Complete load of B@llocks. Says a lot anout the education system and.calibre of students."

"Tells u everything u need to know about the clueless state of the education system and schools here."

Yes you are right, the thread title is misleading, but the worth thing is that most of the posters, including you, fell into the trap set up by Coconuts and Thaivisa and started to write long drivel about the brainwashing of the masses and the stupidity of those students.

The video is full of cliches but that was pretty much expected when the written objective of the contest was to publicise the best image of Thailand. I don't see what's stupid about them, the students just went to film tourist attractions in their province. That's pretty much what I would have done, and certainly not a cutting edge documentary about the general corruption, insane driving habits and commercial sex business if I wanted to have a shot at the prize.

First of all: most of your quotes have nothing to do with "hate", unless YOU fell into the trap by the Thai- authorities, to make you think, that out of the box or critical thinking = hate!

I thought the "objective", was to show, how "expats" think about Thailand!?

Silly me...but thanks for explaining, that it was actually "to publicise the best image of Thailand"!

If the "objective" was what you say it to be: congrats! Mission accomplished!

For everything else, they deserve ALL the criticism they get!

They may be not hateful but extremely condescending.

Yes, based on my translation of the contest web page http://news.thaiware.com/8622.html, the topic was "Thailand through the eyes of foreigners" and the objective was explicitly written to publicise the best image of Thailand. The students made the correct assumption "foreigners" meant tourists and not bitter expats, unlike Coconuts, Thaivisa news aggregator and most Thaivisa posters.

Bitter expats?

I am an expat- I am not bitter!

I just refuse, to leave my brain at the immigration and I like to point out BS, when I see it!

And when the "objective" was "Thailand through the eyes of FOREIGNERS" and the sub- text was, to publicise the "best image of Thailand", then BS was in the "objective, already!
