Can anyone help.

i have a friend who wants to continue to extend his monthly visa.

He's happy for the time being flying in and out to different places...My question is...can he continue to do this and still get his month on entry or is there a restriction on the number of times he can fly in.

thanks for any help...

He can also extend it for 30 days by paying at the immigration.

Does the "2 in one calendar year" apply only to land entries?

I assume we're talking about 30 day visa 'exemptions'.

It is not a visa on arrival, you will be granted a visa exempt stamp which can be extended at a local immigration office for another 30 days at a cost of B1900.--  For land border crossings the max is now 2 visa exempt entries per year.

For arriving at an airport it is up to the immigration officer to decide, latest reports are that if someone has a lot of consecutive 30 day exempt entries they are given the advice to get a proper visa the next time they want entry.  The question really is if the person seeking entry can be looked upon as a 'real tourist', and not someone who just wants to stay longtime and live or work in the Kingdom.

According to the website of the Penang Thai Embassy;

"Immigration authorities further clarified that there is no longer a limit on the number of times a foreigner may enter Thailand within the days allowed on the Visa on Arrival. The former provision stating that visitors cannot stay for more than 90 days within six months has already been dropped".

Beyond 90 Days

A dose of good news awaits tourists—following the new regulation set by Thai Immigration, visitors can now come regularly to Thailand without limiting their stay within a total of 90 days in a six-month period.

The restriction has already been abolished so tourists can now visit Thailand as often as they want, provided that they obtain 30 day Visa on Arrival at airports and 15 day Visa on Arrival if they are traveling via land borders.

However, immigration officials still recommend getting visas prior to arrival in Thailand, as they remind visitors that back-to-back short visas are not the proper way to extend the stay in the country on a long-term basis.

Your friend will have a green light to enter Thailand until he receives the dreaded o/i (out/in) stamp,then it's party over...for a while.

This may be dated information, but I think the routine once was to arrive with a 60 day tourist visa, get the 30 day extension, then leave the country to Vientiane, KL, or somewhere else and start over.  There were limits on how often this could be done, but I don't remember the details and they may have changed.

In the US most of the consulates that used to be able to issue one year multi-entry visas can now only issue tourist visas.  Only the consulates in Chicago, New York and LA can do the one year visas, and the Thai embassy in Washington DC (the embassy has a reputation for being a pain in the sphincter).  If the same sort of thing has happened in other countries, I expect the tourist visas to become much more popular.  Until the rules change again.
