PHUKET:-- Patong Police confirmed to the The Phuket News today they are investigating reports that a British couple were raped and robbed while on New Year’s holiday in Phuket.

The news broke on Saturday (Jan 14), when the BelfastLive reported that Gerald Drumgoole and his husband Michael Burnett were attacked on a night out in Phuket after their drinks were spiked.

The couple, both 33, returned to Belfast last Wednesday (Jan 11) before undergoing medical tests with their own doctor, who confirmed they had been raped, said the report.

“It has just been a very traumatic time for both of us… We have had to be tested for HIV and given an HPV vaccine and tested for syphilis,” Mr Drumgoole told the BelfastLive.

The married couple, both 33, also had their iPhones and more than £400 in cash stolen during the attack, said the report.

In a face-to-face interview with The Phuket News this afternoon (Jan 16), Patong Police Chief Col Chaiwat Uikam said he had not received from his officers any official reports of the men's rape or robbery.

It looks like they were hanging out in the wrong place as this is not something that would normally occur at the shopping mall or temple.

Did they take a couple of "friends" home with them from the gay bar or nightclub? A couple of spiked drinks later they find themselves both raped and robbed ... very similar to that experienced by heterosexual expats who pick up prostitutes on the street and take them back to their hotel.

No doubt the full story will come out in the next few days.

Primarily because no rape or robbery was reported to police over here.

I would imagine that most people who had been traumatically raped, would seek medical and police help as soon as they were aware, not wait until returning some 6,000 miles to their home town.

Didn't this alleged incident take place in Phuket Town? If so, why are the Patong police getting involved? Is it simply a case of Patong finest having more experience in investigating(?) this type of crime?

I was wondering the same, but think it was simply a matter of the Belfast paper's lack of local knowledge and using photos of Phuket Town in stead of Patong.
