Thailand jumps three spots to 44th in Bloomberg Innovation Index 2017

BANGKOK: -- Thailand was ranked at the 44th place of Bloomberg Innovation Index for 2017 – an improvement of three spots from last year’s 47th ranking.

The other two ASEAN countries ranked higher than Thailand this year are Singapore and Malaysia which are placed at 6th and 23rd rankings respectively.

Top on the index is South Korea followed by Sweden and Germany ranked second and third respectively and Finland cracked into the top five.

South Korea tops the international charts in R&D intensity, value-added manufacturing and patent activity and with top-five rankings in high-tech density, higher education and researcher concentration.

Bloomberg said Sweden owes most of its rise to improvement in the manufacturing value-added metric, while Nordic neighbor Finland jumped two spots in large part because of the rise of high-tech firms in the country.

That is very good news for Thailand and that 3 place increase can be solely attributed to those 3 significant Thai innovations, namely;

1)   Pushing water uphill with "thrusters"  copied from the Thunderbirds series

2)   Deciding and promoting that Thai will become the "world language" of choice

3)   Finding the cure for Ebola in 2014

As has been said by others in the past, Thailand is a country of imitators, not innovators.

How could it be otherwise, when every last brain cell in the Thai mind is bludgeoned into mindless obedience and unquestioning veneration of the most unworthy persons ...

Dont forget all the wonderful national innovations like section 44, one gateway and exercise day!

Thailand barely beat out war-tornTunisia. Congradulations.

But outscored by Serbia. Sad.

Out of seven Index factors, Thailand was comparatively strongest in "Manufacture Valued-Added" and "High-Tech Density" while competively very weak in "R&D Itensity," "Productivity," "Tertiery Efficiency," "Researcher Oncentration," and "Patent Activity."

higher education

This was not one of the measures in the Index.

The two areas where Thailand did well were "Manufacturing - Value Added" (Ranked an impressive 18th!) and High-tech density -- weighing in at 33rd, about the average for southern or eastern European countries. But neither of these has much to do with "Thai innovation." They are entirely due to foreign investment in manufacturing, which usually comes packaged with foreign expats whose job it is to make sure that things are run to foreign specifications, not Thai norms. So I hope that Prayut doesn't add this to his list of all-things-wonderful in Thailand.

It makes me wonder what the innovations are, that are being considered. I consider Thailand to be one of the least progressive countries on earth. Progressive thought, and Thailand seem as oxymoronic as it can possibly get. Kids here are just not taught to think outside of a very, very small box, and creative thinking is not encouraged, nor is curiosity. How often do you engage a Thai, who asks really thoughtful questions? It just does not seem to be a part of the culture here. So, where is the innovation? It is definitely not being offered by this administration. Is it?

If anyone knows, please inform. I would love to know where is the source of this "innovation".

You are so right, Spidermike007. My experience here dovetails with your own 100%. The way the poor Thais are locked into a tiny, stifling, nationalistic, restrictive and myopic little box from which to look out upon the world (i.e. Thailand - because there is no world beyond  Thailand)  - is terrifying. It is child abuse and human abuse of the most disgusting and egregious kind. I am appalled by it. I wish I could change it. I do what I can.

But .... I am not a bunch of military d... di.... 'dinosaurs' with their total power over EVERYTHING here (except the monkhood - who are a law unto themselves and are untouchable, even by a thousand tanks).  Think of the Good that could be accomplished by those who wield such unfettered power. But instead - oppression and repression is the name of the (vicious) game.
