That was because the famers cut down a protected species of tree, nothing to do with "quaint laws".

If you are going to shoot your mouth off get your facts straight. They did not cut down a protected species tree. The tree was long dead, broke off and fell on the path. They needed to remove it from the path so had to cut it to do so.

Who is "they" and in which jurisdiction does that ruling apply?   The dead cannot "do" anything, although families or dependants have always had the option to sue.

It was a court ruling. I'll try to find the link. And yes. Obviously.  It's the living who will sue.

There is a mind set here that will never change.

Things like this incident are put down to Karma etc, if you fall in a hole, bash your head on a low road sign etc, the local response is "Your fault you do it to your self."

A tragic event that could have killed anyone, even a small child as many of them run around the pathways.

But for a fraction of a second the deadly log could have landed on the pavement and no one would have batted an eyelid....just some fire wood for the first to pick it up.

Trees are dangerous, as are all things overhead, it pays to look up on occasion......

Western litigation needs to come to Thailand.  Many business owners operate with impunity knowing they can't be sued.  Especially transport operators.  I would hazard a guess the accident rates would drop dramatically if the operators had large lawsuits against them for wrongful death suits.

Remember all those who died in that boat accident in Bangkok? The relatives got an extremely small amount of money.  They just don't care.

The way people drive here is a cultural thing, it could be resolved ith law enforcement and teaching them that a few trinkets on the dashboard isn't going to save you.

And branches fall from trees, its a part of nature.

His Son can sue the municipality,as I'm sure there will be many Thai lawyers to support his case (for a Fee). However will he win,no chance.

Imagine living for 91 years and then being killed by a falling branch .  Just unlucky.

Wednesday noon: The offending tree has been tried, convicted, condemned, and executed.
